Craig will tell us about the upcoming season.

Jim Flamson Summary

"Service After Self"

Quoting District 5130 Foundation Chair David Mark Raymond, Past District 5130’s 2010 Governor Jim Flamson quipped the apt reminder that giving to The Rotary Foundation (TRF) is the gift that gives beyond one’s years.  “You kick off, we receive” in gridiron terms.

Celebrating its first century anniversary, TRF, began as a vision of Arch Klumph, then Rotary International President in 1917. With the modest sum of $26.50 from the 1917 International Convention in Kansas City, the host club agreed to seed the Foundation’s mission: “To doing good in the world.”

In 1930, the first grant, a $500 gift was made to the Crippled Children’s Society, (now the Easter Seals Foundation).  In 1947, when Paul Harris, founder of Rotary died, gifts in his honor of $1.3 million were received to augment TRF, and in 1957 Paul Harris Fellows were instituted, encouraging the further vision and reach of the Foundation.  1979 demonstrated the scope of action achievable when it inaugurated a vaccination program in the Philippines reaching nearly a million people. In 1988, 350,000 cases of crippling polio were reported worldwide.  Thanks to thousands of donors, volunteers and the early vision of Arch Klumph, now only 23 cases are reported in just 3 countries. Today, TRF has granted over 3 billion dollars in projects aimed at improving health, education, economic development and peace worldwide.  It is one of only three foundations to earn a perfect 100 score from the rigorous Charity Navigator rating service, with overhead expenses consuming only 3.5% of contributions.

Closer to home, following the extensive Clayton Fire in south Lake County recently, PDG Jim asked TRF if the $10K remaining in our District Designated Funds could be allocated to LARCA- Lake Area Rotary Club Association.  Overnight Jim’s TRF liaison had obtained both authorization and set up the internal structure to dispense the funds locally.  From that $10K origin, Wal-Mart added $10K, and County Supervisor Brown contributed $10K for a total of $30K+ to provide children of Lake County $400 gift certificates for their back to school needs.  Giving begets giving, and keeps on giving!!

The continuing success of TRF comes from generosity, vision, and ongoing training at the Club-District level to assess, partner and monitor grant participants in order to best maintain sustained credibility and desired results.  The applied for use of funds and achievement of desired goals is never taken for granted.  Up to three years following approval, grant partners monitor and report progress to TRF.  Without verified, acceptable performance evaluations, further grants will not be made.

Locally and Internationally, The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International builds Goodwill, Better Friendships, Healthier Bodies, Sounder Minds, Stronger Economies.  Peace becomes both possible and more probable as standards of living, mutual respect, and self-esteem find root and nourishment.

Sunrise Rotary is applying for a Global Grant to equip the Sabalos, Nicaragua Surgical Center it has been supporting for many years. With cooperation from Rotary Clubs in Managua and San Carlos, Nicaragua, Sunrise and local partners plan on providing X-Ray and Ultrasound diagnostic equipment, surgical instruments, Dental treatment supplies and much more to the underserved area surrounding Sabalos.

Power of the press

It isn't so until you see it in print

Last week, Sunriser Jim Gray was appalled to learn that he had lent his considerable conducting talents to a youth soccer game.  And fellow Sunriser Michael Riel was surprised to learn that he had a son.  And that his son was getting married.  ????

After a period of lengthy, professional, investigative research, delving into these serious allegations, it has been established that Jim Gray actually led a 245 piece marching band at a major University of California game.  (Although Bulletin staff has not been able to procure photos or video of the event.)  And Michael Riel, himself, is getting married.

At the time of this bulletin's publication, no reliable evidence has been uncovered that the proud, new groom actually has a son.  So that rumor is assumed to be false.  Photos of the alleged Riel nuptials are being sought and may be published in forthcoming bulletins.

Sunrisers can be assured that all articles published in weekly bulletins are thoroughly proofed, edited and screened by editorial staff.  Information reported is believed to be correct and verifiable according to reliable sources.

Old news

No recognition necessary???

Rob Sanville claims that he was "recognized" for his trip to Hawaii at a past meeting.  ????  There are some who feel that trips to Hawaii should be continually and lavishly recognized -- particularly as the days in Sonoma County grow cooler and shorter...!

Business travel?

Business as usual in Morocco and Italy

Marty Behr bemoans his business-based need to roam the world's most exotic destinations. President Merle Hayes consoled him by appropriately "recognizing" his recent travel to Morocco and Italy.

All hail the Queen!

Her Majesty, President Merle, masters the Queen's Wave

Upon being presented with a "Queen's pen" by Don Floriani,

who she had "recognized" for his recent trip to Wales,

President Merle Hayes aptly demonstrates the Royal Wave

News From RI

Skydivers raise thousands for polio eradication

The first time Noel Jackson jumped out of a plane at 14,000 feet, it had nothing to do with raising money for polio eradication.

The Michigan dentist had received a gift certificate to go skydiving from his staff because they knew he was into adventure.

“It is definitely a defining moment,” says Jackson, a member of the Rotary Club of Trenton, Michigan, USA, of that first jump, done in tandem strapped to a professional skydiver. “The rush of the free fall is beyond anything I have ever experienced before. Just the speed and acceleration is unbelievable. You don’t even have time to figure out if you are enjoying it or not -- it’s just a sensation that happens.”

But Jackson did enjoy the sensation. So much so that he agreed to do another jump, with Shiva Koushik, a Rotarian friend in nearby Windsor, Ontario, Canada.

The two men were waiting for this second jump when their wives came up with the idea of enlisting other jumpers and raising pledges for polio eradication.

So, in August 2014, a jump in the skies of northeastern Michigan raised $15,000 for Rotary’s polio eradication campaign. Matched 2-to-1 by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the effort contributed $45,000 to the cause.

Since 1985, when Rotary committed to polio eradication, the organization has contributed more than $1.5 billion and countless volunteer hours to immunize children against the disease. In that time, the number of polio cases has dropped 99.9 percent, and only three countries remain where the virus has never been stopped: Afghanistan, Nigeria, and Pakistan. While World Polio Day, 24 October, serves as an important opportunity to remind the world of the need to finish the job, raising money and awareness is a year-round effort for many.
