Dr. Brien A. Seeley is President and Founder of the Sustainable Aviation Foundation. He is also an ophthalmologist in private practice in Santa Rosa since 1977. He is a Senior Member of AIAA, a pilot, and designer/builder of experimental aircraft. He founded the Electric Aircraft Movement in 2007 by organizing and chairing the world’s first-ever electric aircraft conference and went on to curate and chair its annual international meetings. He conceived, wrote and chaired the 2011 NASA Green Flight Challenge and founded the Personal Aircraft Design Academy. While a medical intern at UC Davis and during the 1973 gasoline crisis, when Elon Musk was just one year old, Dr. Seeley designed and scratch-built his own 70 mph, freeway-licensed electrically-powered sportscar and drove it to the hospital each day. He was recently honored to become a Senior Fellow of the UC Berkeley Institute for Transportation Studies.

Our speaker on August 22nd was Bijoya Sen, PhD, a Postdoctoral Researcher in the Hansen lab. She is from India where she got her bachelor’s and master’s degree in Biotechnology. Aging biology was introduced to her when she joined the lab of Gayatri Ramakrishna in Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences, New Delhi. There she studied the role of senescence-associated pathways in the progression of liver cirrhosis to hepatocellular carcinoma and received her PhD degree in 2019. Then she joined the Brand lab at Buck as a Glenn postdoctoral fellow. Her area of research was to explore mechanisms by which mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (ROS) acts as a signaling molecule to abrogate various pathways using hypoxia/HIF as a model. She recently joined the Hansen lab where she plans to delve into the cellular recycling process named autophagy and how it affects aging using mammalian cell culture and C. elegans as a model system. Outside of the lab, she enjoys a challenging hike and experimenting with recipes.

Globally recognized as the pioneer and leader in efforts to target aging, the number one risk factor for serious chronic diseases including Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, cancer, macular degeneration, atherosclerosis (heart attack and stroke), and type 2 diabetes, the Buck wants to help people live better longer.
We had another robust board meeting - so many great things going on this year. We began by approving our financials, which after one month (😄) are still on track! A large portion of the meeting this month was dedicated to approving our Philanthropy Budget for 2024-25. Steve Herron presented a proposed budget which commits about 2/3 of our philanthropy funding for this year. The reason for the hold back is so we can respond to grants and needs that come up later in the year. The board approved the budget, and it will be posted on Club Runner. Starting to think about next year, we will be having some fundraising discussions this month. Steve Herron is organizing these - if you have any interest, reach out to him. John Jones reported on our international projects. We are still hoping to get into Nicaragua but are also looking for new locations where we can bring out dental and eye clinics. Stay tuned with more updates on this. Stacy updated us on the Progressive Dinner survey and as you may know, we have decided not to have one this year due to lack of interest. However, we do want to celebrate the end of summer with another type of social get together Stacy will be working on. If you have ideas, please reach out to her. Mark updated us on the new membership committee's strategies for finding potential new members. A lot of great ideas and we'll need club member help with these. Matthew let the board know that we supported two other rotary clubs in Santa Rosa to update the "Rotary Wheel" that is on the Welcome to Santa Rosa sign. Next time you drive by - take a look! Also, in partnership with membership we are considering sharing a booth with other SR clubs at the Women in Conversation event in Sept. These types of events give us exposure and also give us an opportunity to meet new potential members. Paul gave a summary of the many service projects that came from our new committee. The Service Project committee would like to get input from the club and will be hosting a short roundtable on 8/29 at the meeting. More info to come! Sangkoo Yun is selected to be 2026-27 Rotary International president

Sangkoo Yun, of the Rotary Club of Sae Hanyang, Seoul, Korea, is the selection of the nominating committee to become Rotary International’s president for 2026-27.
Sangkoo Yun, of the Rotary Club of Sae Hanyang, Seoul, Korea, is the selection of the nominating committee to become Rotary International’s president for 2026-27. He will be officially declared the president-nominee on 15 September if no other candidates challenge him.
Yun received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the Syracuse University School of Architecture in the U.S. and an honorary doctoral degree from The University of Edinburgh, Scotland. He is the founder and CEO of Dongsuh Corp., which engineers and markets architectural materials, and the president of Youngan Corp., which operates in real estate and financial investment. He is involved in many civic organizations and has a special interest in the preservation of cultural heritage.
A Rotary member since 1987, when he was a charter member of the Rotary Club of Sae Hanyang, Yun has served Rotary International as a director, trustee, committee member and chair, and RI learning facilitator. He served for eight years as co-chair of the Keep Mongolia Green Project, by Korean members of Rotary. His RI committee roles include the Board Administration Committee (2013-15, vice chair 2014-15), the International Assembly Committee (vice chair, 2020-21), and the End Polio Now Countdown to History Campaign Committee (regional vice chair, 2023-27). He also served on The Rotary Foundation’s Executive Committee (2019-22, chair 2020-21) and Programs Committee (2019-22, chair 2020-22).
Yun received The Rotary Foundation’s Distinguished Service Award in 2021-22. He was appointed an Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II, awarded the Friendship Medal by the president of Mongolia, and recognized for distinguished services by the president and prime minister of Korea. He is a veteran of the Republic of Korea Army and an emeritus elder at Andong Presbyterian Church.
Yun and his spouse, Eunsun, are Rotary Foundation Benefactors, Major Donors, and members of the Arch Klumph Society, the Paul Harris Society, and the Bequest Society. They have two children.
