Message from Speaker Jennifer Strong
Message from Speaker Jennifer Strong
“Thank you Santa Rosa Sunrise Rotarians for welcoming me into your club this morning.  It was truly a special time and an honor to be with all of you!  While this is an incredibly difficult time, it is also a time for each and every one of us to reach beyond what we believe is possible and embrace the power that we all have as Rotarians to lead the way in the recovery of our communities.  The efforts of the Lake County clubs in the creation of the Rotary Fire Relief Fund 2 years ago led to nearly $1M in funds raised and the effective deployment to fire survivors of the devastating fires in 2015 and 2016 in Lake County.  That work is still going on today.  But that fund, along with the knowledge and expertise of the Lake County Rotarians, has now been expanded to the 4 counties affected by the recent devastation throughout our combined communities and renamed the Rotary District 5130 Fire Relief Fund.
The donations have been coming in and the total in this new fund is now approaching $1.5M with more on its way. But we need to keep getting the word out to everyone we know.  What we are all faced with right now is vast and, at times, overwhelming,  but we all have the power to lead our communities through this and come out the other side better and stronger.   The power of this fund is in the grass roots, boots on the ground, zero overhead efforts of a diverse and well-connected group of Rotarians that we all are.  The expanded Rotary fire relief committee, comprised of Rotarians from throughout our 4 counties, has been working very hard to identify the holes and begin the deployment of funds in a disciplined and efficient manner directly to the people most in need.  Now is our time to roll our sleeves and get this done.  I hope that each of you will proudly wear your Rotary logo and help lead the way to recovery.  One thing you can do right now is to get the word out – there are programs such as the Business Recovery Grant Program already up and running and cash donations are still needed.  Encourage everyone you know to go to the www.larca5130.org website for more information.  Thank you again for letting me be with all of you this morning and please don’t hesitate to let me know if there is anything I can do to be of assistance.”

Sunrise Celebrates Rolf Wessman

Sunrise Salutes Rolf Wessman!!

Sunrise Rotarian Rolf Wessman surrendered his nearly 9 year struggle with ALS, Lou Gehrig's Disease October 23.  During his membership Rolf served as Club Treasurer, chef extrordinaire, Paul Harris Fellow and sponsor to Mike Kelley.  Rolf was a member of Rotary in Burlingame, a remarkable host to members and their families, extending hospitality at he and Ann's lovely hillside home and poolside.  An avid motorcyclist, pilot and SCUBA diver, Rolf brought zest and a zeal for life to every occasion.

Rolf inspired all he met to be resourceful and learn to adapt.  Members and friends gathered at Sunrise hosts Penny and Paul to toast and remember the vitality Rolf demonstrated throughout his life.

Randy Seelye presented Rolf's widow Ann her Paul Harris Fellow as well their daughter Sonja.  Sonja, 16 has a scholarship established through Sunrise Rotary.
To the 30 plus friends gathered, the Celebration gave us all a chance to remember and honor a man who embodied all four points of the 4 Way Test, and especially the 5th:  Will everyone enjoy each other!

Rolf's legacy of service and determination is indelible!

Lebanon club member brings water to hundreds of schools

When young Jamil Mouawad of Lebanon was in school studying the hospitality industry in the Dominican Republic, he joined the Rotary Club of San Juan de la Maguana.

Mouawad became club president at age 27 in 1981. In 1996, he returned to Lebanon, a country devastated by a 15-year civil war.

“The infrastructural situation of most schools in Lebanon is beyond catastrophic,” says Mouawad, now owner and general manager of the Ehden Country Club. “Especially when it comes to the water quality.”

In 2011, water samples from schools throughout Lebanon showed disease-causing organisms. Two years later, dozens of students were hospitalized because of water contamination.

“That’s when we declared that Rotarians are on the move,” Mouawad says.

The result was a large-scale project led by Mouawad, then governor of District 2452. The effort includes all of Lebanon’s Rotary clubs as well as outside partners and Lebanese ministries.

The project, with significant funding from The Rotary Foundation, has installed new tanks and water filters at over 700 schools.

The goal is to provide clean water in the roughly 500 remaining schools in Lebanon by 2018, Mouawad says. The water project has taken an extra urgency with an influx of Syrian refugees, a half-million of whom are children. “Our projects are reaching out to both Lebanese and Syrian students,” says Mouawad.
