Seven (7) Surefire Ways to Get Lucky in 2022
2021 has been a whiplash year. The pandemic continues to surge. We suffered a major drought, and life continues to be confusing. However, there were some highlights of 2021 too. We got to see each other in person, and many members of the club got an opportunity to travel again. We have had a semblance of normalcy and it feels wonderful. What is in store for 2022? Who knows, but let’s hope we continue to adapt, overcome, and prevail. For the superstitious members of the club, I have compiled a list of seven (7) things to do to ensure we have a prosperous 2022. My friends at the Farmer’s Almanac helped me with this insightful list.

1) The first person to enter your home after midnight foretells the kind of luck you’ll have in the coming year. A tall, dark, handsome male bearing small gifts is said to bring the best luck. According to this same tradition, no one should leave the house until someone first enters from outside, and nothing should be removed from the house on New Year’s Day. My mother is hoping this will happen to me. I am hoping to have Jimmy Garoppolo make a visit to my house with a diamond necklace. Go 49ers!
2) A Polish tradition states that if you wake up early on New Year’s Day, you will wake up early for the rest of the year. And if you touch the floor with the right foot when getting up from bed, you could expect a lot of good luck for whole new year. Let’s celebrate East Coast New Year’s. Sip your champagne at 9:00 and then straight to bed. I plan to put my right foot firmly on the floor at 6:30 a.m.

3) In Spain, and many Latin countries, eating 12 grapes on New Year’s Eve - one for each stroke of midnight - is said to bring luck throughout the coming year.
4) Eating anything that forms a circle - such as donuts and bagels - leads to good fortune in the coming year. Time to take a trip to Krispy Kreme!
5) Make lots of noise! Have you ever wondered why there are fireworks and people blowing those silly paper horns after midnight? There is a superstition that lots of noise following the stroke of midnight will keep evil spirits away. This is a fact you can share with the cops following a noise complaint from your neighbors.

6) Avoid eating lobster or chicken. Many cultures believe that you’ll experience setbacks if you eat a lobster on New Year’s Eve because they move backwards. Chickens have wings, so if you indulge in this delicious meat, all your luck could fly away! Out of good ideas for food? Add pickled herring to your plate. Pickled herring and doughnuts? Yes please!
7) Don’t clean the house. No need to fret about those dust bunnies, and that pile of dirty socks and underwear on the floor. You will sweep or wash your luck away! Instead drink lots of champagne, eat a dozen doughnuts, and listen to your favorite record on full blast!

I wish you all a very happy and safe New Year. It’ll be fantastic to see you all in 2022!
