1985 Was a Banner Year!!

Named in honor of Steel Lane School Principal and Sunrise Rotarian Vicki Lockner, Vicki's Garden is thriving, reflecting the schools's vitality, diversity and community vision.

Larry Martin, Sunrise Rotarian and Northern California's Slow Food Garden Coordinator who oversees 18 community gardens, spoke with gratitude for the Club's support of Vicki's Garden.  It is the Club's longest running service project.  The garden beat Alice Water's (Chez Panise fame) Berkeley based ground breaking by 12 years.  The garden at Steel Lane has helped mobilize the community and school, being its' nexus/connection to the well documented link between  food~social~community nourishment.  The garden currently has a Gardener, Sabrina, who conducts 12 classes of 30 students each week.  Produce from the garden is 100% consumed at the school.  Garden implements include 2 microscopes for closer observation of natural phenomenon.

Whole Foods Markets have recently donated $2,000 toward the garden's "Market Match" program, to enhance participation & productivity.

Take a refreshing break from your routine and catch a look at what's growing in Vicki's Steel Lane Garden. People, birds, bees & some bugs are fed.  It is located between the third and fourth classroom wings along the driveway entrance closest to the Santa Rosa Recreation Center.
