Vicki's Garden Emerges From Winter
160 fingers, 32 hands, 16 strong backs and willing hearts weathered the chilly Saturday morning air and began to prepare Vicki's Garden for her Spring 2019 harvest.
Sunrise stalwarts Del Raby, Peter Banks and son Mark, Leroy "Golden Hammer" Carlenzoli, Project Director Jen Adams and even Prez Rich managed to make roll call. Jim Gray's trusty GMC half-ton did yeoman's duty hauling 300 pounds of weeds and trimmings to their new home far away. New Garden Coordinator Sandy Sontag, a retired Fifth Grade teacher, brought both refreshments and her trusty Tacoma to carry no less obsolete materials away.

Leroy is no stranger to the Garden, or school. Another volume can be dedicated to the effort and resources Carlenzoli and Associates directed into the expansive turfed field adjacent Steele Lane School.

Previous Sunrise-Steele Lane liaison Max Childs and his daughter Cassidy on loan from Cal moved mounds into proper places. Jen Adams impressed the more senior stewards with her weeding persistence: Watch out crab grass! Jen's got your roots! Leroy organized new planter frames and Steve Zwick did heavy lifting to relocate established ones. Rich drove Jim's truck on a dump run without incident to man or machine. A school student and his father also participated, and has inquired into engaging his associates with a local Machinist group.

Vicki Lockner, Sunrise namesake for Vicki's Garden, retired as Principal at Steele Lane School in 2003 following 26 years educating, inspiring and building community spirit.
