Resilient Landscapes with Jennifer Roberts
Our speaker was Jennifer Roberts, an accomplished Environmental Educator and Landscape Designer. She spoke on wildfire prevention landscape guidelines. Jennifer works with the Resilient Landscapes Coalition; a group of non-profits formed in response to the 2017 Tubbs and Nuns fires that work with city and state fire agencies. They are funded by the County. They found there was a lot of fear and the knee jerk reaction of some homeowners ripping out all the trees and shrubs that sustain us. The coalition focuses on sustainable and biodiversity-friendly landscaping practices. They created guidelines to define defensible space around your homes, starting from 0-5 feet Ember Defense Zone, then the Thirty-Foot Zone and the Beyond Zone. It doesn't have to be a "moonscape." You can create islands of native plants separated by non-combustible materials such as decorative rocks and pathways.
