Esperanza 2018: New Vision & Oral Health
Sabalos 2018 brought improved vision to 760 Nicaraguans and 200 dental procedures to enhance oral health. The 9 Sunrise Rotarians and 2 family members expressed Service Above Self in providing over 1000 pair of eye glasses and dental care support. Led by John Jones, a 30 mission veteran, Steve's Herron and Zwick, Penny Millar with hubby Paul O Rear, Harry Coffey, Ezbon Jen, Carmen Gutierrez, Rich Randolph with spouse Betsy and son Brett trekked daily for three days to the remote village of Esperanza.
The Team has developed an expertise for assessing and fitting corrective lenses and supporting Nicaraguan Dentists and Hygienists.
Each Team member pays their own way, but receives back so much more in terms of gratitude and appreciation for stateside healthcare access. Following the three day clinic duty, the group moved on to San Juan del Sur on the Pacific Coast for R&R.
Included in the post mission work, was a tour of the recently completed Surgical Center in Sabalos. Seven years in the making, the 2,000 sf facility is awaiting new equipment pending approval of a Rotary Foundation Global Grant. Touring the new surgicenter was a true dream come true for members who have followed the concept from idea to fruition.

Stay tuned for the next chapter in the life of the clinic, as Sunrise continues to partner with San Juan River Relief in helping fund the Centers surgeon, anesthesiologist and OBGYN during the initial 18 months of operation. Come to Sunrise "Puttin' on the Ritz" April 14 to celebrate and bid on the Center's future!!
