It was a great event! The Environmental Sustainability Rotary Action Group presented the movie, "Micro Plastic Madness."
ESRAG (Environmental Sustainability Rotary Action Group) and several Santa Rosa area Rotary clubs, include Sunrise Rotary, hosted an enjoyable evening at the Summerfield Theaters last Wednesday evening, viewing the award-winning film, “Micro Plastic Madness”. Over 100 people attended making it a busy night in the lobby for an hour before the film of catching up with friends and talking with experts about plastics in the environment at multiple information tables. Representing Sunrise Rotary were Rich Randolph, Stacy Drucker-Andress and friend George, Peter Hoberg, Leroy and Carol Carlenzoli, Dicksie Tamanaha and guests, Marty Behr, Steve Amend, Rob Sanville, Merle Hayes, Paul O’Rear and Penny Millar.
The film followed a Brooklyn class of 5th graders as they learned about plastics- how they are made, how we have not addressed how to dispose of them, how they get into our sewer system and eventually into the oceans. Compelling data was provided on how ultraviolet light and other agents in the environment break down the trash into smaller and smaller components, being consumed by smaller and smaller animals, which are then eaten by larger predators (fish), getting into our food chain. Plastics are now found in all oceans in the world. The class decided to act, getting their school to hold a “Plastics Free Lunch Day”, and then lobbied the New York City Council to eliminate use of Styrofoam lunch trays altogether. The movie provided much educational information in a fast-paced, fun manner and was highly inspirational.
