Stacy finishes one of the multitudes of boxes assembled last week at Redwood Empire Food Bank. Evan, Steve Zwick's grandson awaits the next box to fill. Over 10,000 loaves of bread were sorted, packed and sealed for distribution.
Roy and Del expertly orient and stack the empty bread crates. Legend has it over 1,000 crates were sorted, providing 5 TONS of baked products to be boxed for community members in need.
Penny Millar, prepped in her workout suit, elects heavier loaves for the box' bottom row. As the boxes fill, lighter products like hot dog and hamburger buns, LOTS of them last week, quickly narrow the gap.
Age was no barrier to serve! Two Seventy+'s (Steve Zwick and Betsy Randolph along with Betsy's 8 y/o grandson Callan complimented each other's moves.
As the evening progressed, jackets came off and focus sharpened. Stacy, Penny and her brother Glenn were in the zone. Somewhere amidst the flying loaves were Merle Hayes and Steve Olsen. Last Thursday's assignment was our first "Bread Line" tour of duty. Three family members, grandsons Callan of Rich and Betsy, Evan of Steve and Jacquie and brother Craig were indispensable! We rose to the occasion, and partnered with the Exchange Club for the first time. Statistically speaking, this crew of 19 moved 526 loaves of bread apiece!! Talk about busy bakers.
Moving 5 tons of bread takes many hands, young and younger! We all were ready to refill our energy boxes following the project. Rotary connected family in new ways that evening, and made some new friends in old surroundings. A great nourishing recipe!
