Rotary Special Private Walk at the Sonoma Mountain Vernal Pools

Sunday, March 9, 2025 – 9:30a-12:30p -- Rotary Walk with a guide from Sonoma Land Trust and wildflower expert Betsy Sanville.  Light rain or shine.  No dogs allowed.

An easy and enjoyable Sonoma Land Trust guided walk on private trails  About two miles, mostly flat, with slight rises and drops, and no major elevation gains.  Early spring flower interpretation along the way by Betsy Sanville.

Highlights:  Vernal pools are among the most ecologically important and distinctive areas in California.  A type of temporary wetland, they support a diverse range of native plant and animal species, including spring wildflowers.  A hard underground layer prevents the pools from draining in the winter and spring; the water gradually evaporates, until the pools become completely dry in the summer and fall.  For more information on the Vernal Pools, see https://sonomalandtrust.org/vernal-pools/

Date, Time & Directions:  Sunday, March 9 -- 9:30a-12:30p.  Meet at Galvin Park at the corner of Bennett Valley Road and Yulupa, from which we will carpool and caravan out to the Vernal Pools.  There is limited parking at the Vernal Pools, so this offsite parking and carpooling is required.

Rating:  EASY.  About two miles of relatively flat trails.

Dog-Friendly:  No

Bring:  Water, walking stick (optional, but useful on the trails), sun protection, light jacket (if cool morning or in case of light rain).

Spouses, partners, friends, and other guests welcome.  This is an excellent opportunity to connect with with Rotary friends and a good introduction to our Club.

Organizer:  Marty Behr.  For more information, contact Marty at 206-391-3427 or behr@whidbey.com
