Community Service Committee
It is our aim to plan and participate in at least one community project per month. The ideal project should serve our community by assisting some group in their operations or by meeting an expressed need. In addition it is also desirable for the project to draw exposure to the work of Rotary within the community. We hope to have fun with our friends and do some good in our own community.
Tempe South prides itself on its community involvement. Should a project be needed please contact our Community Service chairperson (listed on the Home Page).
Project C.U.R.E.
This indoor project allows everyone to participate with light lifting and sorting of medical supplies. Project CURE competes with the dumpster for medical supplies that are then put to work in grateful countries around the world. Project CURE takes great care to make sure that their shipments get into the right hands. Not one container has fallen into black market hands in the world's trouble spots since 1987.
Rose Trimming at Phoenix ZooRotarians and family members trim, deadhead and rake the roses and gardens at the Phoenix Zoo. This is an annual Fall event that serves the needs of the zoo as the roses need rejuvenation after a hot summer. An annual Winter hard pruning is needed to get roses ready for their spring bloom. Great fellowship and an educational event on rose care. On both occasions, Tempe South Rotarians are able to enjoy a day together at the zoo.
UMOM New Day CentersUMOM offers homeless families an opportunity to clean up, receive training, and gain employment in a safe environment. UMOM, a non-profit family shelter helps families reach self-sufficiency. Rotarians help maintain the property and prepare rooms to ready them for a new family.
Light the luminarias
We sell luminarias for Friends of the Orphans and lighted "sparkles" to benefit the TS Foundation. Rotarians set out over 3,000 luminaries around Tempe Town Lake This event is one of Tempe's best holiday festivities.
Tempe ARC (Ariz. Retarded Citizens) Christmas party
One of the most heart warming and rewarding events on the TSR calendar. We take gift suggestions from the ARC leaders. Each Tempe South Rotarian purchases at least one gift for the person of their choice and our club holds a Christmas party for the members of ARC.
Rotary River RallyThis is a signature event for the Tempe Rotary clubs. The Great Cardboard Boat Regatta raises money for schools and other organizations. This project gives Rotary valley wide exposure and draws groups from every part of our community. We receive remarkable feed back from teachers each year. The desire of students to be involved in the boat building and racing provided motivation and discipline for the whole term. This project puts money into the participating clubs to fund individual children's projects. Tempe South members provide help with the event operations, administration and planning.
The Dictionary Project
Tempe South Rotary supports the drive to provide dictionaries to all third graders with donations to The Dictionary Project and delivery of dictionaries to local schools.
