Jamie Sellar and McKenzie Simmons presented the work of The Wellness Community at our September 19 meeting.

The Wellness Community provides free programs that complement traditional medical care for cancer.  These include support groups, nutrition, exercise, education, stress management, and alternative therapy for patients, their family, and caregivers.

The Wellness Community was engendered 36 years ago by the breast cancer diagnosis of Harriet Benjamin, wife of Dr. Harold Benjamin.  In 1982, based on studies linking the state of mind of a patient to the strenth of the immune system, Harold and Harriet Benjamin instituted a psycho-social support system for cancer patients in Santa Monica, CA.  It has since grown to a national organization providing support and education to cancer patients in 30 centers across the US and throughout the world.

The Wellness Community will be hosting a Gala Dinner and Raffle on October 25.  Seats are $300 and raffle tickets (only 100 available) are $100.  First prize is a Hawaiian trip and $1000 spending cash.  Contact McKenzie Simmons at 602-712-1006 for details on attending or volunteer opportunities.

The support given by the Wellness Community give cancer patients hope.

"Knowledge gives us hope.  Without hope, we can't fight.  If we can't fight, we can't win." - Sue Della Maddalena, The Wellness Community.
