Sing-fun Nieman taught us about the Mission: Love Life program for underprivileged children.
Mission: Love Life teaches positive life skills to underprivileged children. It currently is working with kids in the after-school program at UMOM New Day Center's transitional housing for homeless familites. Efforts are underway to include the teens at UMOM as mentors to the younger kids.
The program teaches the kids to love themselves, their family, their community, and their environment. The lessons are encapsulated in activities and interactive demonstrations. Kids are taught pride in their efforts and get to keep their work. The kids are encouraged to share what they've learned with their family. They are taught responsibility (they have to do the 'homework' and remember to bring their folders to each class). They are publicly rewarded for their participation and acheivements.
The children are encouraged to do well in school. The kids get a prize for each 'A' they earn at school. With good grades, they have the opportunity to earn a Mission: Love Life college scholarship upon graduation from high school.
Sing-fun encouraged Tempe South Rotary to do it's part to help the environment by eliminating the use of styrofoam cups.
