When Mariana Day moved in 1989 to the small beach town of Chacala, in Nayarit, Mexico, she noticed that the surrounding rural areas struggled to maintain schools. And most children weren’t able to go beyond an eighth-grade education. Day, who is a member of the Rotary Club of Bahía de Jaltemba-La Peñita, in Nayarit, had started a local scholarship program before she joined Rotary. Today marks one year since Nigeria last reported a polio case caused by wild poliovirus, putting the country on the brink of eradicating the paralyzing disease.
The last case was reported on 24 July 2014 in the northern state of Kano. If no cases are reported in the coming weeks, the World Health Organization is expected to remove Nigeria from the list of countries where polio is endemic, leaving just two: Afghanistan and Pakistan.
Nigeria is the last polio-endemic country in Africa. The continent is poised to reach its own first full year without any illness from the virus on 11 August.

Even in the United States, with its considerable resources, there are 36 million adults who can’t read better than the average third-grader, according to the international nonprofit ProLiteracy. In Detroit, Michigan, a widely cited 2003 survey conducted by the National Institute for Literacy found that almost half of residents over age 16 were functionally illiterate -- unable to use reading, speaking, writing, and computer skills in everyday life....

Spending his youth moving to new homes around Edmonton, Rick grew up with Pigeon Lake adventures and a desire to see more of the world. Germany for a year of schooling that led to 3 years in Japan and a world wide trip returning home to Edmonton and a Banff tourism job catering to Japanese travelers.
Rick has operated Harcourt Staffing since 2008 and has played Ultimate Frisbee as an avid amateur.

The Links Golf Course (100 Links Road, Spruce Grove AB)
One of YESS' favoured events, this tournament starts with a tasty breakfast, followed by a shotgun start. During the day, we host proximity contests, food and beverage holes, a fun online auction and so much more! Wrap up the day with great prizes and a tasty BBQ dinner.
The fun starts with registration and breakfast at 9:00 AM, followed by a shotgun start at 10:00 AM. Volunteer positions available:
Hole Monitors (9:30am – end of golf day, usually around 4pm)
Set up Support (6am – 8am)
Tear down support (all volunteers who are available after their shifts)

YESS has been selected to participate in the 2015 Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation (EOCF) 50/50 program! We are very excited about this, but it's coming up fast and we need a LOT of volunteers!
YESS will receive a donation in exchange for providing volunteers to sell the 50/50 tickets. We will receive a base pay of $6,000 PLUS a commission of 20% over $100,000 total sales! The more we sell, the more YESS will receive! Date: Monday, September 21 (pre-season game vs. Calgary Flames) Location: Rexall Place Parking: Free, limited parking is available in the Mount Lawn Lot (120 avenue and 75 street). Paid parking is available in Northlands Park south of 118 avenue (next to Expo centre) for $16.00/vehicle. Volunteer shift: 4:30pm - around 9:30pm (50/50 ticket sales end halfway through the second intermission, so end times will vary)
*Please note: all volunteers MUST arrive at 4:30pm - no exceptions, no late-comers.
Volunteer positions (# volunteers needed):
Sellers (40)
Sellers will be responsible for making themselves noticeable to the public in order to encourage customers to buy tickets. After ticket sales end, Sellers may be asked to assist in organizing the aprons and/or performing other duties in the Count Room.
Best suited for volunteers who are enthusiastic, outgoing and want to SELL SELL SELL! The more tickets we sell, the more money YESS gets so we want true go-getters in these positions!
The volunteer who sells the most tickets will win a prize!
Cash Counters (10)
Counters will be stationed in the Count Room for the duration of the evening and will be handling cash in a time-pressured environment. After all of the cash is counted, Counters will be expected to assist in performing other duties in the Count Room.
Dockers (10)
Stationed in the Count Room for the duration of the evening. They will be responsible for docking the individual selling devices to a laptop, printing off the seller summary and ensuring a new batch of tickets are downloaded correctly to each device.
Printer Assistant (1)
Stationed in the Count Room for the duration of the evening. They will be responsible for watching the ticket printers to ensure everything is printing properly and changing the printer paper. Please note: this volunteer is required to stand for the duration of the evening.
Volunteer Requirements:
Must be 18+ (no children will be admitted with volunteers, no exceptions)
50/50s at these games can be physically demanding - volunteers must be able to work under pressure/time crunches and be flexible
Must bring valid government photo ID
Volunteers are not permitted to to remain in Rexall following their volunteer shift, and must leave immediately at the end of their shift (EOCF is not providing game tickets to volunteers)
All volunteers are expected to follow guidelines/rules (to be sent closer to game day)
We have had a request for volunteers to help make meals for the Meals on Wheels program.

The date that has been requested is October 9, 2015. The requirements are for 6 - 10 volunteers who would work from 0830 - 1130 hrs. The description of the work is as follows:
Kitchen Helper
Help Meals on Wheels prepare for 200-400 meals each weekday by chopping, peeling, dishing and packaging food, washing, baking and more.
QUALIFICATIONS: Volunteers must be at least sixteen (16) years of age, capable of standing for long periods of time, able to lift up to 20lbs and be comfortable using kitchen utensils such as knives, peelers and other sharp objects. Must be able demonstrate the ability to work with others.
