When Mariana Day moved in 1989 to the small beach town of Chacala, in Nayarit, Mexico, she noticed that the surrounding rural areas struggled to maintain schools. And most children weren’t able to go beyond an eighth-grade education. Today marks one year since Nigeria last reported a polio case caused by wild poliovirus, putting the country on the brink of eradicating the paralyzing disease.
The last case was reported on 24 July 2014 in the northern state of Kano. If no cases are reported in the coming weeks, the World Health Organization is expected to remove Nigeria from the list of countries where polio is endemic, leaving just two: Afghanistan and Pakistan.
Nigeria is the last polio-endemic country in Africa. The continent is poised to reach its own first full year without any illness from the virus on 11 August.

Laura Kiriak (in the red Rotex jacket) and her visiting friend from Denmark, Nona Nielson (incorrect spelling very likely) were the fun, youthful element needed to raise the the level from good to great at Tuesdays meeting.
We learned to listen to Dansk. It was like a trip to IKEA with an interpreter. Thanks Hans Granholm for the quick chatter with the young ladies.

Three host homes on vastly different settings and islands added to the "weirdness" of Denmark.
Other "weird" things had me picturing all Danes to be as follows:
-Emotionally guarded, smoking Beatniks, dressed in black, biking to English class (computer in the basket), then biking home to eat some potatoes and gravy.
-Impressive medical and education systems in Copenhagen and the rest of Denmark gave Laura a sense of what is required here to improve, here in Alberta.
Experience summed up:

Thank you very much to you and the Edmonton Strathcona club for having given me the opportunity to attend district conference this year. I had an incredible time surrounded by such amazing people! I made friends both with the youth and the Rotarians, and learned so much about the global and local impacts of Rotary.

As the bell was struck to adjourn the meeting last Tuesday, we had a surprise visit from Andrew Grose, comedy performer and co-host of the weekday afternoon show on CHED and the producer of the annual ATB Edmonton Comedy Festival.
Andrew is the good looking dude on the left. Don't know the imposter on the right :-)
The festival has been running for the last five years and from all accounts, it is a huge success and getting better year by year.
I believe Peter Denooy was engaged from the get go organizing the transportation detail, specifically transporting performers to and from the airport and between venues.
This year Peter couldn't interrupt his sun tanning sessions on the beach in the Dominican Republic, so Hans G. stepped in and, with Peter's help via the internet, organized the transportation schedule.
Andrew wanted to thank the volunteers in person and he did so with grace and some emotion.

When Matt Moreau from the Earth Group spoke to our Club in July, he mentioned that they would be making up holiday gift boxes to be available in the Fall. Each box sold will feed and educate a child for a year and sell for $80 each.
For those of you who were interested, I would be willing to gather the orders and ensure delivery.
As several members were interested in supporting this campaign, and on Matt's behalf, I now make this appeal to those of you who are interested.

Dear Fellow Rotarians,
The life blood of our Rotary Club and Rotary International heading into the future is the successful recruitment and retention of new Rotary Club members. As time marches on, it is imperative that we are all actively identifying prospective new Rotary Club members, and inviting them out to our weekly club meetings.
Part of our recruiting initiative over the last couple of years, has been to have special lunch meetings devoted to inviting prospective new members to introduce them to our club, and to provide some insight into the benefits of joining Rotary. We have been holding these traditionally in the spring and the fall, with good results.
We are excited to announce our next Prospective New Members luncheon will be held on Tuesday November 3, 2015, and will coincide with our annual visit by our Rotary District Governor. Our District Governor this year is Tim Schilds, who is a dynamic speaker and is very good at highlighting the great work that Rotary is doing locally and internationally. We think this would be a great way to introduce prospective new members to Rotary.
I challenge all of our active Rotary Club members to invite a friend, colleague, family member or just someone you may know who would appreciate Rotary. The lunch cost for any prospective member will be picked up by our Rotary Club.
In fact we would like to extend our offer of a free lunch to any prospective member for any regular Rotary Club of Edmonton Strathcona lunch meeting, until further notice, to encourage the attendance of prospective new members throughout the year. We have attached an invitation letter for you to send out to anyone who may be interested in Rotary.
