When Mariana Day moved in 1989 to the small beach town of Chacala, in Nayarit, Mexico, she noticed that the surrounding rural areas struggled to maintain schools. And most children weren’t able to go beyond an eighth-grade education. Day, who is a member of the Rotary Club of Bahía de Jaltemba-La Peñita, in Nayarit, had started a local scholarship program before she joined Rotary. Called Changing Lives, the program provided students with high school tuition, uniforms, school supplies, and transportation. In addition, Rotary clubs from the United States and Mexico have been investing in the...

From the September 2015 issue of The Rotarian Eradicating polio is a complex job. Since 1988, we’ve collaborated with the World Health Organization, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and UNICEF to tackle the disease through our Global Polio Eradication Initiative. Here’s how our roles break down. The Strategist: WHO The World Health Organization (WHO) coordinates the management and administration of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative and provides technical and operational support to ministries of health in countries around the world. WHO is responsible for monitoring...

Today marks one year since Nigeria last reported a polio case caused by wild poliovirus, putting the country on the brink of eradicating the paralyzing disease. The last case was reported on 24 July 2014 in the northern state of Kano. If no cases are reported in the coming weeks, the World Health Organization is expected to remove Nigeria from the list of countries where polio is endemic, leaving just two: Afghanistan and Pakistan. Nigeria is the last polio-endemic country in Africa. The continent is poised to reach its own first full year without any illness from the virus on 11 August. “...

The rules of the Shaftesbury Rodeo Academy are simple: no school, no rodeo. It’s a message that teenagers who attend school at Bisley Farm, most of whom have never attended any school regularly, take seriously. Because come Friday night, these aspiring rodeo heroes want to join their friends to ride bulls for a heart-stopping eight seconds, if they last that long. The school in rural Queensland, Australia, also teaches the boys, who are of the Wakka Wakka Aboriginal people, basic academics and farming skills, including how to care for crops and livestock. It’s a fairly common form of...

Kristy Russ tackles the pill prescribers
After 15 years of prescribing medicine to patients, Kristy felt that symptoms were being treated while drug side effects and the original cause of unwellness was being overlooked or further medicated.

Here are the 5 areas to consider when wanting to return to a healthy self:

- Diet: Lose cravings with better food choices.

- Nutrition: Recommended Daily Allowance figures in the food guides is unrealistic. 22,000 daily calories are   required to meet the recommendations. 97% of us don't meet them anyway.

- Excersize: Metabolic changes make your body protect itself in different ways. Too much work will make fat storage important.

- Stress Management: Linked with "Getting Good Sleep", means take it easy and lose the stress.

- Balanced Hormones: One will work against the others if you are supplementing from somewhere else.

Very informative and helpful talk in a short time.

Karen Good from Youth Support Services Society is the scheduled speaker for Tuesday, October 6th when she will be giving us an update on the status of The Youth Empowerment & Support Services. YESS are inviting our support with a special request of juice boxes, granola bars, and deodorant. Their goal is to collect 700 of each by October 15th. I will be collecting whatever donations you wish to bring to the meeting and will present them to Karen at that time. Your support would be appreciated.

NOTE: This request from our community partner, YESS, was not directed at this club exclusively. YESS approached all their partners in the community. Therefore, do not fell obligated to clean out the shelves at Costco. (Publ.)

Here is some "evidence" of the great time had by all last night, September 26th, at the Oktoberfest held at the home of Skip & Caren Kerr.

Over 60 people attended the event and ALL the proceeds were donated to the Edmonton Library to purchase Early Literacy Kits. A cheque in the amount of $2500 was presented to Emmy Stuebing, Associate Director of Fund Development of the Edmonton Library.

Skip and Caren treated us to a pig on the spit, German sausage, beans, beer, wine, desert and we have to admit the event ran with a "German precision". The best dressed couple was definitely Hugo & Lucie Lehmann.

Dear Fellow Rotarians,

The life blood of our Rotary Club and Rotary International heading into the future is the successful recruitment and retention of new Rotary Club members. As time marches on, it is imperative that we are all actively identifying prospective new Rotary Club members, and inviting them out to our weekly club meetings.

Part of our recruiting initiative over the last couple of years, has been to have  special lunch meetings devoted to inviting prospective new members to introduce them to our club, and to provide some insight into the benefits of joining Rotary. We have been holding these traditionally in the spring and the fall, with good results.

We are excited to announce our next Prospective New Members luncheon will be held on Tuesday November 3, 2015, and will coincide with our annual visit by our Rotary District Governor. Our District Governor this year is Tim Schilds, who is a dynamic speaker and is very good at highlighting the great work that Rotary is doing locally and internationally. We think this would be a great way to introduce prospective new members to Rotary.

I challenge all of our active Rotary Club members to invite a friend, colleague, family member or just someone you may know who would appreciate Rotary. The lunch cost for any prospective member will be picked up by our Rotary Club.

In fact we would like to extend our offer of a free lunch to any prospective member for any regular Rotary Club of Edmonton Strathcona lunch meeting, until further notice, to encourage the attendance of prospective new members throughout the year. We have attached an invitation letter for you to send out to anyone who may be interested in Rotary. Please RSVP to myself directly with the names of any prospective members who will be joining us for our lunch meeting on November 3rd.

Warmest Rotary Regards,
Eric
