After a year of shrinking polio cases worldwide, the crippling disease is now on the cusp of being eradicated, said top health officials at Rotary's second annual World Polio Day event on 24 October. At a special Livestream program -- World Polio Day: Make History Today -- Rotary leaders joined global health experts and celebrity singers to hail the progress of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative. After nearly 30 years, the GPEI, which includes Rotary, the World Health Organization, UNICEF, U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, is on...

Erin Mills had just finished teaching for the day in Montevideo, Uruguay, when her smartphone buzzed with a message. An impromptu gathering to watch Uruguay's World Cup soccer match was being organized. Through the power of a mobile messaging app, a majority of the Rotary Club of Plaza Matriz had soon assembled at a member's home to munch on baked goods and chips while rooting for their national team. That enthusiasm and ability to draw a crowd has made the club, which just received its charter in July, a success in the country's capital city. Made up almost entirely of young professionals,...

Rotary celebrates World Polio Day on 24 October with a Livestream event featuring expert speakers and celebrity performers. Hosted by Time magazine science and technology editor Jeffrey Kluger, the Chicago event also includes a global status update on the fight to end polio and the challenges that remain, as well as information about joining Rotary's historic campaign. The program, being held before a live audience at 18:30 Chicago time (UTC-5), includes a performance from Tessanne Chin, 2013 winner of the TV show "The Voice," an introductory message and videotaped performance by reggae star...

When asked to describe his future, a refugee child from Iraq draws a picture of himself as a doctor. Another child uses colorful paints to depict happy memories of his former life in Iraq. Both children are among the 200,000 displaced Iraqis who now live in Jordan, a country that has become a safe haven for those fleeing oppression and war in neighboring Palestine, Syria, and Iraq. Alexandra Dawley, a former volunteer with the Collateral Repair Project in Jordan, emphasizes how something as simple as an art project can help young refugees adjust to their new lives in a foreign country. With...

Hunger affects more than 800 million people worldwide, according to the United Nations' World Food Programme, and one-third of all the food grown every year goes to waste. Together, we can change that. On World Food Day, Thursday, 16 October, join a conversation on Twitter from 12:00 to 13:00 Chicago time (UTC-5), using the hashtag #RotaryHunger. During the chat, food experts will talk about ways to alleviate hunger and malnutrition in your community and around the world. Rotary (@Rotary) will moderate the chat, and experts from organizations including Rotary First Harvest (@RFHarvest), the...

Stories
Dr. Katie Peterson shared some facts about human trafficking and it's effects on the people involved. 120 countries have signed an agreement to battle the problem. Commonly thought to include only sex workers and female (65%), Katie pointed out that men and cheap (or free) labour (35%) are an unwanted commodity when run by exploiters for their own gain.

Thursday, October 23 saw more than 20 prospective new members show up to plan the upcoming year. Here are the minutes from that meeting:

Important points we have discussed at the meeting today:

Ronald McDonald House: possible times for that will be during December, February, and April. We will be going after school from 3:30 to 7:30 pm.

Allen Gray(senior home): It's just a few blocks down from school we will possibly be walking there, we will go during November or December, on a Wednesday, for the whole day from period 1 and coming back at period 4, we will bake cupcakes or Christmas cookies depending on the month we will be going.

Helping Hampers: we have discussed the idea of making 5 boxes for helping hampers from the Rotary Club, this will be sometime in December, where it wouldn't interfere with the school calender, we can do it on a different time, it doesn't matter.

FIELD TRIP!!: we are planning for a fun field trip sometime in January to the Telus world of science, we'll discuss it more in detail through our upcoming meetings.

Festival of Trees: we will volunteer there, we will discuss it more during the next meeting.

Rotary Executive: We will be making a rotary board with the pictures and names of the Rotary executives as well putting quotes with each one.

Our club KIVA team has recently passed a milestone or two. Patrick Gibson advised us that we have now been active with 100 (!) small loans to small businesses amounting to $8,800. in this, our first year of involvement. 100% of the 100 loans have either been paid back in full or are in the process of being paid back.
55% of loans have helped women, often with university tuition. Men and small agriculture based loans seem popular choices also.
Good work by everyone involved in this positive, immediate solution that helps us connect with real people around the world.

Update for Rotary

Dear Friends,

Greetings from eastern Congo.

When steady electricity, internet connections and free time permit, I am able to stay abreast of Rotary news from the town of Goma here in Eastern Congo. I will be sorry to miss David Holdsworth on heritage buildings and the upcoming talk on human trafficking, the former because I have an interest in heritage buildings, and the latter because human trafficking is an ongoing problem in most of the places the Canadian Army sends me.

So, Congo, Democratic Republic of. A quick scan of world news paints a bleak picture of this country, and it is sadly accurate. Every sector of society faces widespread and systemic corruption: government, police, military, justice system. Human rights violations of the worst kinds are systemic and occurring in large numbers every day. Add to this mix so many armed rebel groups that it is difficult to enumerate them, and the scope of the problem can be overwhelming. But rather than dwell on pathos, I’d like to describe briefly what I am doing here, and show you what the results are when international organizations like Rotary turn their attention to issues like the dreadful situation here.

My small role is primarily to plan and coordinate the military operations conducted against armed groups, under the wider goal of protecting the population and restoring state authority. Planning military operations here involves more than tactical decisions – we integrate efforts to rescue child soldiers, reintegrate surrendering rebels back into society, care for the families of combatants who are dragged into the conflict, promote womens’ rights, and then follow military operations with massive efforts to achieve an enduring stability in an area.

The UN is perhaps the largest organization trying to assist the Congo, but not the only one. Numerous countries provide financial assistance, and international organizations including Rotary make an incredibly important contribution in the lives of individual Congolese people. There are Rotary Clubs in Kinshasa and Bukavu, which is an amazing achievement in such dire circumstances.

Outside of my day job, I have had some opportunities to help in a more direct way. On weekends I and my fellow Canadian officers support a local orphanage/school by delivering supplies. There are several other villages where Canadian support has built wells, brick schoolhouses, and provided the necessities of life. As you can see from the attached photo, it is also clear that our clothing donations do, in fact, reach their intended targets.

When I see the appalling conditions around me, I am heartened by the knowledge that Rotary and so many other organizations exist. The larger problems of the Congo require a political solution, but in the interim, Rotarians and others are stepping up to make life better for the people. The results are gratifying to witness.

I look forward to seeing you all prior to Christmas and I hope that you are all healthy and happy.

"Guess Who's Coming to Dinner?"

November 8th

Guess Who's Coming to Dinner is a social program of the Rotary Club of Edmonton Strathcona. It is designed to provide an opportunity for Club members and spouses/companions to meet other Club members in an informal, social, small group setting.

Typically a Member would Host one month and be a Guest for two months. All Members are encouraged to participate - even if for only one month. The visitors should expect anything from spaghetti or pizza to steaks. The most important part of this program is the fellowship and the opportunity to get to know each other better.
