October is often the best weather in Houston! We finally get a taste of the cooler fall activities. Football is in full swing. Rex has more activities than you can count with “his kids” at Sharpstown HS Interact. And we are planning our October 29th Literacy Project at Neff Early Learning Center. This is our major Service Project for the Sharpstown Community. We appreciate Southwest Management District sponsorship of this community service. Contact Jon to see how you can have an IMPACT! October is Community Economic Development Month! Our Ed Webster Vocational Scholarship Program is getting new energy! Our Chair, Rex, is reorganizing this important program to provide scholarships to our Interact students who choose a skilled career rather than a four-year college path. Are you someone who would enjoy helping this committee?  A SUCCESSFUL MEMBERSHIP HAPPY HOUR IN SEPTEMBER! Membership Director, J P did it again with District Leader Support! We were honored to have Sunny Sharma, recipient of The Rotary Foundation Distinguished Service Award (the highest award of the Foundation) and the Rotary International “Service Above Self” Award (Rotary International’s highest individual honor), present compelling reasons to join the 1.2 million Rotarians united to make lasting improvements. Rashmi accompanied Sunny – always the epitome of a pair committed to positive impact. PDG Tom Kelchner and DGE Dona Burke expressed their assertion that the Rotary Family is the place to find friendships, build leadership skills and make meaningful contributions to our planet. We are excited that two quality people submitted applications and another took one to consider. Alice Lee, Pct 4, surprised us with City of Houston Certificates for J P and his team of Hosts and District Guest Hosts. Adding to the celebration, Yuming, recently returned from her trip to Taiwan and Greece, was awarded her Blue Badge, having completed her Red badge requirements by doing a make-up at a Rotary Club in Taiwan. Congratulations to her and her sponsor, “Papa” J P. FLAG FUNDRAISER We retired the 126 U.S. flags on Bellaire Boulevard after 9/11. Rex and our Sharpstown HS Interact Club with Advisor Chief Eric Cano, have proven to be a terrific team. Yunchiu organized the pick-up team with Rotarians and worked with Karen & Jon to have all flags carefully “rolled, socked & bundled” for safe storage!  Our next installation will be Nov 1 to prepare for Veterans Day! INTERNATIONAL SERVICE Saleem returned from Pakistan where he laid some groundwork for Creating Lasting Impact for those who need it most. With our Club’s help he will be bringing hope to many in the region. October will be busy for members of our Club with lots of special dates including: - 8th - Kyle Fu Art Opening
- 10th - "Ride To End Polio Now"
- 11th - Theater Social at The Company OnStage
- 24th - “Walk for those Who Can’t”
- 29th - Neff Early Learning Center Book Distribution
