Books for the World – Founded by the Seabrook Rotary Club in 2000 at the inspiration and under the direction of Past District Governor Charlie Clemmons and Past President Barbara Clemmons, Books for the World has shipped over 7 million pounds of text books and 180 containers to 18 developing countries. Too large to be handled by one club, the Second Wind Foundation was established in 2006 to manage its operation.

Children of the Dumps – Eleven years of Communism followed by the devastation of a Hurricane called Mitch in 1998 left many of the people of Nicaragua with less than nothing. Among them were approximately 800 children discovered living in and later rescued from a dump in Chinendega, Nicaragua. “Less than nothing” is probably hard to imagine, until you go there.
The Seabrook Rotary Club participated with other Rotary clubs in District 5890 on a very noble project that began in 1996 under the direction of Humble Rotarian Frank Huezo. Rotarians bought the materials and supplied the know-how. The Nicaraguans supplied the labor and built over 500 homes in three villages. Each village had a school, with a kitchen, clean water and sanitation. Economic development projects were initiated that allowed residents to become self-sufficient in less than 3 years.

The former youth of the dump have schools now, clean clothes, and hot meals, as opposed to the garbage that sustained them in the past. There are now about 1700 students in our schools, a hospital, a pregnant women's shelter, a nearly self-sustaining trade school with a home for the blind, and much more.

Foreign Exchange – Our club hosts a foreign exchange student every year and funds a local, American student abroad.

Santiago Panama – Between 2001 and 2006 The Rotary Club of Seabrook worked closely with the Rotary Club Santiago Panama in their efforts to improve their local orphanage and retirement home, both of which were in desperate need of repair. Other joint projects focused on ways to foster independence and self-sufficiency within their community, including a grant of sewing machines that were used to teach and eventually provide employment for village women. Additional support was provided in grants from Rotary International and Rotary District 5890. The ambulance shown in the photo was donated by the Seabrook Rotary Club in 2006.
Polio Plus – Rotarians make annual contributions to Rotary International’s Polio Eradication Project begun in 1985. Rotary International has raised over $1 billion towards the effort, including a very generous $250 million matching grant from the Bill Gates Foundation in 2011. Now so close to success, polio cases are reported in only three countries – Nigeria, Pakistan and Afghanistan. We owe it all to the tireless and selfless efforts of many thousands of committed Rotarians. Rotary has led the charge, but the resources and the support of the World Health Organization, the CDC and UNICEF have been invaluable in this effort. Rotary is the only Non -Governmental Organization with a seat at the United Nations.
Clean Water and Sanitation is the newest of Rotary International’s worldwide projects. It was initiated in 2010 as a way to reduce early mortality in developing countries.
