Our speaker will be Tony Irwin, President and CEO at the Federation of Rental-Housing Providers of Ontario (FRPO), the voice of Ontario’s rental housing industry.
With low rental vacancy rates across the province and continued uncertainty about London’s volatile housing market, it’s becoming more difficult to meet increasing demand of quality long-term housing choices for Ontarians.
London’s rental vacancy rate is slightly improved from last year, at 2.1% up from 1.8%, but it’s clear more needs to be done to keep up with the demand new housing-seekers from the GTA and new immigrants. Ontarians need policy solutions from all levels of government that will stimulate vital new rental supply and reduce pressure on prices for both traditional home ownership and rental.
FRPO’s President & CEO Tony Irwin will address the issue of Ontario’s insufficient rental housing supply head-on, discussing potential short-term and long-term solutions.

February is Rotary Peace and Conflict Prevention/Resolution Month Of the 60 million people displaced by armed conflict or persecution, 90% are civilians. Half of those civilians are children. That’s millions of reasons why Rotary is so engaged in service projects, fellowships and other Rotary-sponsored campaigns in pursuit of peace in our world.
We train adults and young leaders to prevent and mediate conflict. We aid refugees who have fled dangerous areas. Rotarians also address the underlying structural causes of conflict by relieving millions of people suffering from poverty, inequality, ethnic tensions, lack of access to education and unequal distribution of resources.
In yet another program to achieve worldwide peace, up to 100 Rotary Peace Fellows are selected to attend Rotary Peace Centers to participate in master's degree programs at one of the partner universities. Rotary Peace Fellows study subjects related to the root causes of conflict and explore innovative solutions that address real-world needs. There are more than 1,000 peace fellowship alumni are working in over 100 countries.

The Jack Burghardt Community "Service Above Self "Award
This prestigious award may be awarded annually in the spring of the year. The purpose of The Jack Burghardt Community 'Service Above Self’ Award is to recognize a member of the Rotary Club of London who is primarily involved as an active community volunteer in “non-Rotarian” activities,and secondarily as an active member within the Rotary Club of London and or at the District level.
All current active members of the Rotary Club of London, including Board members, are eligible to receive this award with the exception of the following members who are previous recipients: Bill Barnett, Jim Swan, Heather Broadhead, Bruce McGauley, Randy Warden, Felipe S. “We’re All Stars” Luncheon
As part of the Sports Celebrity Dinner on Monday, April 1st, earlier in the day at the London Convention Centre the children & youth with special needs from Thames Valley Children’s Centre will enjoy a pizza luncheon with a number of the sports and spectra celebrities. 10 to 12 Rotarians are needed to help set up, serve the pizza, and clean up from 10:30 to 11:30 approx. The Rotary Leadership Institute Program’s ‘Rotary Learning and Information’, consists of three parts, I, II and III, to be taken progressively. Each part is a one day seminar, those taking Part II must have completed Part I; to take Part III, Part II must have been completed. The Parts are divided into 6 modules of approximately 55 minutes each. Attendees register for one part only at a cost of $75.00 which covers light breakfast, breaks, lunch and materials.

Start2Finish Running & Reading Club Volunteers The Start2Finish Reading and Running Club Program is one of our Club's local service projects for this Rotary year.
Start2Finish is looking for volunteers to help, on a consistent basis. It's an after-school program that runs at the following 5 TVDSB locations on the days indicated from 3:30pm to 5:30pm: Wilton Grove (Adelaide and Southdale) - Tuesdays Wilfrid Jury (Sarnia and Wonderland) - Tuesdays Woodland Heights (Springbank and Wonderland) - Wednesdays FD Roosevelt (First and Oxford) - Wednesdays Trafalgar (Trafalgar and Hamilton) - Wednesdays
The first half of the club is devoted to physical activity and the second half is literacy. All volunteers are not runners - there are ways to support the kids without actually running. The highest needs, for volunteers, are at Wilfrid Jury and Wilton Grove. They have a high percentage of Western student volunteers, who are away most of December, reading week, and from spring exams on. Those times they are extremely low on volunteers at that club.

Breakfast of Champions Award Recipient This past Tuesday at the Breakfast of Champions, organized by St. Joseph’s Health Care Foundation and the Middlesex branch of the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA), the two Champion of Mental Health Awards were presented by CMHA Middlesex. They recognize a group and an individual who make significant contributions to mental wellness in our community.
Mental health advocate Kristen Legault-Donkers, a psychology student at King’s University College, received the ‘individual’ award for the series of books she published on depression, anxiety, ADHD and bipolar disorder geared to children. Through a partnership with our Rotary Club the books will be distributed to 100 elementary schools in the Thames Valley District School Board. Congratulations Kristen!
