Mr. Ivan Butterfield, a fellow Rotarian from the Oyster Creek Rotary Club, visited with our club on Thursday, March 31, 2011. Mr. Butterfield spoke about Rotary's partnership with Dolly Parton's literacy Program, the Dolly Parton's Imagination Library. Started by Dolly in 1995, the mission of this program is to mail one book a month to a child from the time they are registered until the time they turn five years old. The child can be registered as soon as the day he/she is born. It has been documented that in the first three years of a child's life, 90% of the foundation for future learning is established. Therefore, one of the goals of this program is to assist children to learn to read. Rotary Clubs can elect to get involved by adopting a neighborhood (within a zip code) and by committing $28 per child to this program. The Dolly Parton's Imagination Library Program will do all the work to select and mail out the books to the children each month.
