Thank you to Amy Schuett for bringing us an interesting program featuring a special sensory and family friendly production of the Lion King sponsored by Hennepin Theatre Trust. Jen Diederich, a clinical supervisor at the MN Autism Center and an advisor for the Hennepin Theatre Trust was our speaker. She provided background information on autism and the challenges it presents for the individuals and families it impacts. 1 in 50 Minnesota families impacted by autism, and those families are typically shut out of many typical outings because of the difficulties in sitting quietly observing social "norms" in group settings, as well as the high cost of theatre attendance for a family that is often weighed down by high treatment costs. Hennepin Theatre is providing a special treat for those families, including many special adaptations and lowered ticket costs for their July 3rd production. Adaptations include lowering loud (potentially frightening) noises, raising house lights, allowing for standing and movement, designated sensory areas, with fidgets, earplugs, and head phones provided. In addition, they are providing families with social materials in advance of the performance so they can plan and teach about the event, as well as a "meet your seat".
