Last week we heard from two amazing local adventurers who set out in June on an epic 3000 miles rowing adventure while competing in "The Great Pacific Race" from Monterey, California to Waikiki, Hawaii.  Adventurers Erin Hammer and Ryan Foss set out to challenge themselves and raise money for Children's Hospitals guided by their motto "doing what we love...taking chances and dreaming big." Only 350 people in modern history have crossed an ocean in a rowboat. They began preparing for their adventure in March, 2015, with physical endurance training combined with learning about meteorology, navigation, survival skills, medical knowledge, boat care and packing, and inversions. Their boat was solar powered rowboat with a small cabin and an undersea parasail anchor. The last two weeks of training were in Monterey where they underwent "scrutineering" to determine if they were race-ready, and ultimately won the pre-race competition to prove their sea worthiness. Rowing in 8 hour shifts, Erin and Ryan flourished for the initial eight days of their journey before a giant wave inverted their boat. While the boat survived, Erin broke her wrist, necessitating a helicopter rescue at sea. While disappointed that they were unable to complete their endurance adventure, these two inspiring people were part of a team that delivered $300,000 to the Children's Families in Need Fund.
