 | Andrew Mullin is the volunteer Executive Chair of the Wayzata Conservancy a 501c3 non profit organization that works in concert with the City of Wayzata to implement the Lake Effect plan to implement Panoway on Wayzata bay. ( www.panoway.org ) Phase I of this project was recently completed which created additional park open space along Lake Street in downtown Wayzata. In 2011 City of Wayzata received some artifacts from the fallen World Trade Center towers from a local Wayzata family the Aamoths who unfortunately lost their son Gordy on the 104th floor of the south tower. The City has decided to create a memorial to honor the 20th anniversary of that tragic event. Attached and below are some more details on the project and we would be seeking support from Rotary. Becky thought it might be a good idea to also provide the group with an overall update on the project I will leave that to you. The Memorial Grove as part of the Panoway Plaza Park provides a shaded area of respite within the larger activated plaza. Designed with a simple Bosque of Birch trees in a field of tactified granite, the memorial grove scales down the overall lakefront experience while providing users with a quiet and contemplative space. Set within the grove is a memorial to honor Gordy Aamoth, a native Wayzatan, who tragically lost his life in the unfortunate events of 9/11/2001. Comprised of two granite plinths measuring 27 feet long and 40 inches wide, the memorial casts a striking form reminiscent to the iconic silhouette cast by Twin Towers on the Manhattan skyline, while providing a place for the community to gather, reflect, and honor. Designed to accommodate a single user or groups of people looking to both pay their respects and to enjoy Wayzata’ greatest natural resource Lake Minnetonka, an experience that was critical component of the design to the Aamoth family. The memorial is constructed of locally-sourced Cold Springs Granite, selected for its timelessness and durability. The benches provide both an object to display artifacts salvaged from the World Trade, a tableau for a dedication to Mr. Aamoth, First Responders and all who lost their lives on that tragic day. |
