One of the ways Wayzata Rotary supports the local community is through fundraising and using that money to support local organizations. The Link is one of those organizations that WRC has supported.Jelena Strong, Corporate Engagement Officer, joined our meeting and gave an overview of the history of The Link. Started in 1991 by 2 Minnesota Vikings players who recognized there was a support need for young people in the area. Their goal is work with youths and families to overcome the obstacles of poverty and social injustice. Today The Link supports 21 programs: youth based, advocacy, housing and shelter, and education. 85% of the services provided are to People of Color. The majority of their funding comes from Government grants and they are working to build more partnerships with community organizations, such as Rotary's.
Youth Leadership: The Link’s Youth Advisory Committees
The Link is a youth and adult led organization and operates all programs in the model of Positive Youth Development. The Link has five youth advisory committees that are made up of youth that have experienced homelessness, sex trafficking and/or involvement in the juvenile justice system. These committees members are paid part-time The Link staff members. They design and oversee our programs, staff hiring, community conduct training and specialized projects such as the Youth Participatory Action Research Project with the University of Minnesota. All committees and members are essential in gaining true expert insight and voice. The committees also offer the opportunity for youth to gain career development and leadership skills.
