Dr. Vivian Fischer - Guest

Dr. Fischer joined us and shared her professional insights and experience with COVID-19. Two areas she's given a great deal of thought to are the ethical issues around a pandemic and that a strong centralized leadership is needed to manage the response. As of July 8, there were over 40,000 confirmed cases in Minnesota.

Dr. Fischer noted that they way she provides care has changed because of the pandemic.  One of the biggest issues is the shortage of PPE (personal protective equipment).  She specialized in virology research and thinks that the PPE that is available is OK but not adequate.  She was a bit more comfortable that Minnesota has caught up a bit on PPE needs in Minnesota, but is still worried.  Of interest, many physicians are taking on some sort of volunteer furlough to help clinics and hospitals save on money and use that for purchasing PPE.

After the murder of George Floyd, Dr. Fischer spent 2 days on the ground helping residents and volunteers with any medical needs she could provide.  She shared that Powderhorn Park (a homeless tent encampment) is being run by neighborhood volunteers and only has one shower facility run by the organization "Nechama."  The lack of access to clean water makes people living here more vulnerable to contracting COVID-19.  

Dr. Fischer recommends that everyone have a health care directive and have a conversation with your family about your care should you contract the virus.  She also reminded us to reach out to friends who may be quietly sinking - it is a time to check in on your friends and neighbors and to not take this pandemic lightly.  Members were able to ask loads of questions and Dr. Fischer would be happy to answer any additional questions or come and talk to us again!
