Cozy Wittman, of College Inside Track, gave us a very informative and interesting overview of how the "play" and navigate the college search project. With tools and knowledge, the college search can be much less stressful and save families thousands! Today, the average college debt per student is $57,000 and our society has decided it is ok for students to take out a loan to pay for education. Knowing this is a reality today and that student loans are second in magnitude to a home mortgage, Cozy shared some great information on what to look for when financing college.There are two types of aid: Need and Merit based. Need based students are defined by each individual college. The biggest influencers are the family and student's income and assets. She recommends highly to have any assets in your child's name moved to parents as parental assets are assessed at 5.64% while student's are assessed at 20%.
Merit based aid is tricky and she recommends that students check if the college they are interested in even offer merit based scholarships. Many do not! She suggested you look for schools where the student is interesting to the college. What makes a student interesting? Top 25-30% of test scores, extra curricular activities, gender or ethnicity, and to consider out of state colleges. She also shared the anatomy of what colleges look at to determine merit aid.
