Last week Doug introduced us to Nick Swaggert, an advocate for veterans in the workplace. Nick enrolled in the Marines and served two tours in Iraq and Afghanistan before attending college and launching a successful corporate career. He shared that the most difficult thing he's ever done is returning from active duty and leaving the military. Upon return, he found that vets don't do a very good job integrating into civilian life in general and the work force in particular, and that the world around them doesn't do a great job of trying to understand returning vets.  Veterans are twice as likely to be unemployed as the general population, despite strong discipline and skill sets. Seeing a need, Nick has chosen to work within the corporate world and as a volunteer to help veterans learn to match, refine, and learn to speak about their job skills to a civilian workplace. He left Wayzata Rotary a request: to seek out and interview at least one ex-military candidate for your next job opening.
