Dustin was a sheriff's deputy in Andover County who responded to a loud music complaint at a private home, which left the homeowner dead and Dustin seriously injured. That incident led to years of uncertainty for Dustin as he waited to be cleared by the shooting review committee. After years of wrangling, Dustin retired from the force on medical disability, but continued to suffer from not only the shooting but also the unresolved process. Ultimately, Dustin found that forgiveness was the key that allowed him to move past PTSD, substance abuse, and depression and into a new and purpose-filled life. When Dustin realized that he was the one being hurt by his choice to stay angry, he was able to free himself by choosing to forgive those who had taken his career in law enforcement away.
