At the Podium

 

Randy Shaver spoke last week about the Randy Shaver Cancer Fund and his own personal journey as an on-air journalist and cancer survivor. Randy was diagnosed 17 years ago with Hodgkins Lymphoma and waged a public battle against the disease, working on-air at KARE11 throughout his treatment. At the time of his diagnosis he was already engaged in the battle against cancer, acting as chairperson for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's annual Golf Tournament. Randy and his wife now champion their own 501-c3, the Randy Shaver Cancer Fund, which gives away over $500k annually in seed funds to make vital cancer research a reality at the U, Mayo, and around the globe. Their efforts have grown exponentially, aided by community donors, especially the MN Football Coach's Association's "Tackle Cancer" program and the MN Wrestling Coaches Association "Take Down Cancer" efforts. 

 

Randy noted that virtually everybody has been touched by cancer personally: either their own diagnosis or that of a relative or of someone they are close to. "We shouldn't be ok with that", he said, "we shouldn't be ok with cancer, we need to fight hard."
