Every April RI designates as "Magazine Month".  It is a time we focus on our publications…but I think this should be expended to include all of our communications.  The month should be renamed "Communications Month".
Some people prefer to get their information from print media where others are more and more turning to electronic media.  Electronic media is much more efficient when dealing with time sensitive material. Our websites, email, and electronic newsletters are also an important means of getting our message out.

The Magazine is rated one of the best issued by a non-profit organization.  The English language magazine we receive originates out of Evanston, IL and has a subscription of over 500,000.  When combined with the other RI publications worldwide, there are over 1.25 million issues published monthly.

The magazine is RI's main non-electronic communication device and is one of Rotary's oldest traditions. The following is an excerpt from what past-RI president D.K.Lee wrote about Magazine Month last year: "In January of 1911, a 12-page newsletter called The National Rotarian was published; it contained an essay by Paul Harris, 'Rational Rotarianism,' along with club news and editorials. Of the new publication, Harris wrote: ' The primary purpose of The National Rotarian is to provide a means for the exchange of ideas between Rotarians throughout the world, not to give the national officers an opportunity to express their views. These messages are not written merely to fill space; nevertheless we look forward to the day when they will be literally crowded out by surging mobs of virile Rotarian ideas struggling to be heard.'"

Rotary communications are the ways our ideas and information become disseminated.  What's going on, what other clubs are doing,  and upcoming events.  The idea for the recent Treasure Valley Rotary Ethics is Business Award luncheon held last month was found by one of our members in a copy of the Rotarian.

Boise Sunrise Grants

April is also the month our clubs determines the recipients of our annual grant process.  This year we have received about 40 requests which is way up from last year.  This is due to the fact that we were able to get the Statesman to publish the announcement of our granting cycle this year.  The Board is in the process of organizing and ranking the grants to determine  which grants will fund and to what extent.  Once completed, the results will be shared with you.
