Dog-Strangling Vine Volunteer Weed Pull

In mid-August, with the help of 10 dedicated volunteers, we removed 8 XXL garbage bags worth of invasive Dog-Straggling Vine (DSV) from a site on Sesame Street in Kentville—the only site known to have this species of DSV in the province!

 
During the weed pull, we were lucky enough to see some Monarch Butterflies! As DSV poses a threat to this endangered species—Monarchs can mistakenly lay their eggs on DSV, resulting in the loss of a generation because Monarch caterpillars can only survive by eating Milkweed—it was a heartening sight. We hope to continue to see an increased presence of Monarch Butterflies there as a result of the hard work of our volunteers.
 
The bags are now solarizing to ensure all viable plant material is destroyed before being properly disposed of later in the fall.
