PWD Committee, “PWDC”

The Rotary Motto is “Service above Self”.  Formed in 1924, the Rotary Club of Kentville has served the community for the past 100 years in a myriad of ways following this principle. The Club has constantly supported people in the community, financially and otherwise, especially children with needs.  For example, in December 1924 the Club purchased a “lovely suit of clothes … for $15 to enable a boy to attend school”.

The PWDC is the “good Samaritan” arm of the Club.  It helps individuals who are in need.  The PWDC is the most recent of a succession of committees doing this work under different names.  From its beginning, the Club has significantly supported children with medical and educational needs, During the 1940s and 1950s it particularly helped children crippled by polio through a Crippled Children’s Fund.

In 1949-50 the Club started a Radio Auction to raise significant funds for its community service projects.  The Auction continued for over 50 years until replaced with the current Valley Faces of Business project.

In 1979, the Hilda and Lewis D. Chipman Memorial Fund honored the Club with an endowment of 20% of the annual return on its invested capital to aid handicapped or crippled children.  One of the first PWDC gifts from this fund was a bursary for a child with learning difficulties to attend the then newly formed Landmark East not-for-profit school in Wolfville.

The PWDC focuses on assisting people with limited resources who need help to either or both maintain/improve their health and quality of life.  Committee members are very familiar with community needs and available resources.  Members thoroughly screen each application to confirm the need and the applicant’s lack of resources.  Applications are advanced by individuals in need and by many other organizations who serve our community.

In recent years the Rotary Club of Wolfville Mud Creek has generously supported PWDC financially and participated in its work.

The PWDC has operated successfully over the many years since it's beginning and continues to do so. It has contributed hundreds of thousands of dollars to the community, helping people, children, and adults, with special needs, because of their condition, and without the resources to meet their needs.

The Committee is looking forward, with optimism and enthusiasm, to continuing this good work into the future.
