Aug 8th Program

with the Port Arthur YMCA presented this week's program.  The Y Reads With You program was a joint venture between Sam Houston Elementary School and the YMCA.  They took kids at the 3rd, 4th and 5th grade levels who were 2 or 3 years behind in reading and in an after-school program at the Sam Houston Campus worked with them on their reading skill.  As the program progressed the kids showed improvement in their over all confidence and self esteme.  At the end of the program all of the kids pass their TAKS Test.

Next year the program will be expanded to include kids from the new Lucian Adams Elementary School.  The program was funded by a grant from the local United Way.
