End of Life Care - Hospice

This week Lela Parrish of Hospice of Texas told us about hospice care.  Hospice elegibility is dependent upon a life expectency of six months or less.

Hospice is not a place, but a concept. It is a compassionate, patient centered approach to medical care for those patients for whom curative measures are no longer an option.

Hospice provides:

  • Treatment of the physical, emotional and spiritual needs  of the family and patient.
  • Palliative Services provided in the home or in a facility.
  • Focus on the management of the illness to ensure the patient is living pain-free and comfortable.
  • Provision of nursing services, pharmaceuticals and medical equipment.

Hospice considers helping family members and caregivers an essential part of the program.
