Supporting Literacy and Reading

Rotary Club of College Station Supports Literacy and Reading—A Head Start to a Successful Life

The Rotary Club of College Station is investing in the future—one reader at a time.

In support of youth literacy and leadership, the club recently presented donations to the public libraries serving Bryan and College Station. Promoting literacy is a key part of the club’s mission, and supporting local libraries helps provide access to books, storytelling programs, and resources that encourage a lifelong love of reading.

On Friday, September 15, 2023, Rotary Club President Nancy Dickey, Service Chair Cherrie Pullium, and Rotary And Reading (ROAR) Program Coordinator Nancy Downing joined Bea Saba, Library System Director for Brazos County, to present $2,000 to each library in support of youth programming.

At the Clara B. Mounce Public Library in Bryan, librarians Bea Saba and Elaine Platt accepted the donation alongside Rotary representatives. Funds will be used to purchase interactive books that read aloud in both English and Spanish—an especially valuable resource for children who may not have someone at home to read with them.

At the Larry J. Ringer Library in College Station, the donation will support the library’s monthly story time program. These events include book readings, arts and crafts, and hands-on activities designed to engage young readers and foster creativity. Library staff Makenzie Kubacak and Derika Bailey joined Bea Saba in accepting the check during the presentation.

Literacy is foundational to academic success, career opportunities, and lifelong learning. By helping children learn to read—and love reading—the Rotary Club of College Station is strengthening the future of the Brazos Valley.

Through partnerships like this, Rotary continues to turn service into impact—right here in our community.

Annual Florence Nightingale Awards

The Rotary Club of College Station held their annual Florence Nightingale Awards on November 9, 2021. For the past 30 years the club has annually recognized local Certified Nursing Assistants working in Bryan and College Station.  This year 6 C.N.A.’s were chosen by their supervisors and peers for their outstanding performance in 2020.  We were excited to award each winner with a plaque and check for $500.00.

ImageOn Saturday, April 20th, students from the Bush School of Government and Public Service partnered with the Rotary Clubs of Bryan, College Station, and Katy to paint a 30-foot map of the United States at Southwood Valley Elementary School. The colorful map, located next to the playground, will provide teachers with a fun, educational tool to increase their students’ knowledge of the geography of our country. 

Both Rotary and the Bush School are committed to service in our community, nation, and world. Many thanks go to our volunteers: Dr. Joe Cerami, Annette Denton, Kathleen Karika, Jerry Kingsley, Marlee Kingsley, Brian McDonough, Jeff Ostrich, Melanie Passons, and Bunny Pratt.
