The Rotary Club of Cupertino

  • 1955 First meeting - March 7, 1955. Sponsored by Sunnyvale Rotary Club. Darrell Sedgewick elected first president. Chartered March 23, 1955 with 25 members.

  • 1957 Started annual scholarship at Fremont High School. Still 25 members.

  • 1967 Added scholarships at Cupertino, Homestead and Lynbrook High Schools.

  • 1968 Sponsored a Boy Scout troop.

  • 1973 Awarded first Paul Harris Fellow to Past President Earl Goodell.

  • 1975 Earl Goodell elected District Governor.

  • 1980 Celebrated 25th anniversary. Membership at 45.

  • 1982 First Oktoberfest fund raiser. Membership at 53.

  • 1984 Contributed $18,000+ to various groups including $9,000 to TRF. 64 members.

  • 1986 Contributions at $30,000. All members became sustaining members.

  • 1987 Pledged $75,000 to Polio Plus. First women admitted into membership.

  • 1990 Club commended for highest per capita TRF giving at $297. Membership at 87.

  • 1992-94 Estonia Project - a grant from TRF provided cardiac care monitoring system for a hospital there. Team from club made 2 trips to Estonia to assure proper completion of project. Set tone for many such efforts in the future.

  • 1994 First Golf Tournament fund raiser at Deep Cliff Golf Course with Hanson Cement as major sponsor. Three Interact Clubs in local high schools. Adopted Gazebo in Memorial Park as club hands-on project.

  • 1995 Jim Walker elected District Governor. Membership at 110.

  • 1997 Cardiac care monitoring system provided to hospital in Ankara, Turkey as part of TRF grant and in partnership with other clubs; valued at over $1 million. Club reached financial milestone - having one full year's worth of annual giving as a reserve.

  • 1998 Started new policy of selecting major donor to benefit from proceeds of annual Golf Tournament. Donated new 15 passenger van to YMCA Teen Center valued at $28,000. A total of $117,000 donated to various local charities and Rotary International projects.

  • 1999 Donated $35,000 to newly reopened Eaton School Library to buy books. Lead club in providing 3 kidney dialysis machines to teaching hospital in Ghana. Club members active in Polio Plus to "Kick Polio Out of Ghana".

  • 2000 Donated some $75,000 (including tiles) for furniture for new Cupertino Senior Center. Partnered with other clubs to provide cardiac monitoring equipment in Tibet, an ambulance in Honduras and library books in Taiwan. Membership 115.

  • 2001 Donated $40,000 to Cupertino Community Service for new affordable housing complex.

  • 2002 Donated $55,000 (including tiles) to the De Anza College Child Development Center. 35 members traveled to Texcoco, Mexico to deliver 240 wheelchairs to those lacking mobility. A Total of $200,000 was donated to local community and youth organizations and for Rotary International projects. Membership at 130.

  • 2003 Donated $55,000 to Via for new beds for Camp Costanoan - a camp for disabled youth and adults. Don Allen elected District Governor. Membership at 140.

  • 2004 Rotaplast surgical project adopted - $50,000 donated; members traveled to Guatemala for project and to deliver more wheelchairs. Membership at 150.

  • 2005 Club Endowment doubled to $387,000. First international trip to China for schools and wheelchairs. Centennial project - $40,000 donated for Heritage Grove at Civic Plaza. $25,000 donated to PACE for client services. Club celebrated 50th anniversary. Membership at 160.
