Program for September 4th: A Trip down Memory Lane: Memories of Cupertino Chamber of Commerce

A TRIP DOWN MEMORY LANE: Memories of the Cupertino Chamber of Commerce from 1985-1988. In the 1980’s Cupertino was straddling the line between its current position as a seat of commercial activity of world renown and its agrarian past. Will Lester, one of the “L’s” in Vallco, was still living in a small house on Vallco property, and Steve Jobs had not yet returned to Apple to lead it into the renaissance that resulted in the iPod, the iPhone, the iPad and other world-changing, market-driving innovations. The chamber of commerce was a witness to the changes happening in Cupertino, chronicled in its award-winning newsletter by its young Executive Director, Kathy Myles (today Kathy Thibodeaux). Take a trip down memory lane or learn something new about the Cupertino you know and love—plus see photos of some of your fellow Rotarians who were movers and shakers of the chamber, the Rotary and the community. Kathy hopes to make you laugh, touch your heart, and reaffirm your love for Cupertino.

Program: Orrin Mahoney on History of Fall Festival
President Padma introduced PDG Orrin Mahoney who spoke about the history of Fall Fest. This fundraiser started 37 years ago in Vallco Village as Octoberfest—so you don’t have to count, that’s 1982. It is so far back that Jim Walker was President at the time. It was billed as a cultural fair with entertainment for the whole family. Net income was $7,500.
Four goals were established and still hold true today:
1. Build a stronger Rotary Club by having fun while working toward a common goal.
2. Stage an event that provides wholesome family entertainment for Cupertino area residents.
3. Enhance the image of the Rotary Club of Cupertino
4. Generate revenue for our community service projects.
…and an unwritten goal—always do the chicken dance as part of the festivities.

Program Committee Update
Alysa Sakkas & Louisa Roberts spoke about the committee and how it works. Chairs serve two years. Approximately 25% of the programs are pre-set. For the remainder, ideas are collected throughout the year. Committee members meet twice per year to review suggestions and brainstorm and then rank possibilities. After voting, a point person is designated to see the decision through with the speaker until the program is delivered at our meeting. The future schedule with speaker pictures and biographies can be found on Clubrunner.
They look for dynamic and informative speakers on topics of interest to the membership, but must exclude political campaigning and sales or marketing pitches. If you have a candidate speaker, speak up. In any case, the committee invites your feedback on speakers.
