Interact Clubs Need Donations
The Interact Clubs are again collecting supplies to create gifts for others. They request toilet paper rolls to fill with goodies, trinkets, and treats for local nursing homes and hospitals. They can also use left over gift wrapping paper, ribbons and yarn to tie the ends of these treats. Sheree Pierce, sponsor of the West Brook Club, asks that you bring items to the club meetings and/or the Rotary Office before November 10 so she can make a delivery to the Interact Mixer.

"Judge Lamar Cecil
and the
60th Anniversary of the
Desegregation of Lamar Tech"

Our speaker today was Historian Robert J. Robertson, Past President of the Rotary Club of Beaumont {1975-76}. Robert was introduced by Alan Sampson, alias "Slugger Sampson."
On the 60th Anniversary of the historic desegregation of Lamar Tech, Robert “sang like a canary” as he told the history of Judge Lamar Cecil, the key figure in upholding and implementing this decision in Southeast Texas.
Lamar Cecil was raised in Houston. His father was a long-time railroad man. Cecil obtained most of his education in Catholic schools and studied to become a priest. After one year, he dropped out to enroll in Rice University. He went on to become a defense lawyer, and was then appointed a Judge.
Keeping in mind that Texas was a state that was dominated by Democrats who resisted desegregation, Judge Lamar Cecil presided over two court cases here in Southeast Texas in 1955 and 1956 that had local, statewide, and national importance as our country was wrestling with the issues of desegregation and civil rights.
The first case involved a lawsuit filed against the City of Beaumont by 5 black men who wanted to play golf at Tyrrell Park Golf Course back in the "Jim Crow-times" when it was for “whites-only." Judge Cecil quickly ruled in their favor. While the five men prevailed, the ruling incited protests and "massive resistance" classified as "white-backlash."
The second case was brought by students who were denied admission at Lamar Tech under the “whites-only” Jim Crow laws. Again, this ruling was met with protests and resistance. Supremist groups, including the KKK, saw their numbers increase as these and similar rulings brought out some of the worst behavior in many arenas throughout our nation.
The Judge had a very interesting life during which he helped build a platform for the presidential nomination of Dwight D. Eisenhower. He also rubbed shoulders with Thurgood Marshall.
Unfortunately, Judge Lamar Cecil passed away in 1958 and did not live long enough to see the enactment of the 1964 Civil Rights Act laid out by President John F. Kennedy and followed through to law by President Lyndon B. Johnson.
Today we saluted Judge Lamar Cecil for the "ground-breaking work in civil rights, and thanked him for paving the way."
