PROGRAM PREVIEW
November 9, 2016
"The Port of Beaumont:
The Nation's Military Support Center"
Lt. Col. Brad Bane
Commander
842nd Transportation Battalion

Just days before November 11, it is appropriate that we pause and bring deserved attention and honor to veterans who are members of our Club and enjoy a presentation by the Commander of the Army's 842nd Transportation Battalion at the Port of Beaumont.

The 842nd Transportation Battalion is part of the Army’s Military Surface Deployment and Distribution Command. This command has been at the forefront of our nation since September 11, 2001, serving to deploy and redeploy military units overseas for combat operations.

The Port of Beaumont is recognized as the No. 1 military cargo port in the world.  In the past two years, the command has been equally busy receiving equipment returning from war that will be refurbished and reset to meet any future contingency operations for our nation.

The unit contracts with commercial rail and truck activities to move military cargo back to home stations and Army depots. The unit is comprised of service members and civilians working with the Port of Beaumont and commercial stevedores to get the job done.

Interesting fact: there are approximately 23.2 million military veterans in the United States, and 1.7 million of those men and women currently call Texas home.

Deadline announced!
Nominations for VOCATIONAL EXCELLENCE AWARDS
In recognition of “Service Above Self,” the Rotary Club of Beaumont will recognize and honor individuals who exemplify a “service above self” attitude in their vocation on Wednesday, November 30.

These coveted awards are given annually to community members who demonstrate exceptional service, honesty, and friendliness in performing their jobs.  Some past recipients describe receiving this honor as "a treasure,"  "very special," and "the only time I've received anything like this."

With the chosen date immediately following Thanksgiving, it will be a wonderful time to give thanks for the good work of others in our community.

We appreciate your support of this honor with your nominations of deserving people who you have come in contact with through your business transactions.  Please submit your nomination to Bridget Johnson at email ladybmj@gmail.com by Friday, November 11, 2016.

DONE IN A DAY PROJECT
Time to step up to the plate again!  Almost literally! This quarter's service project, to be "Done in a Day," is an opportunity to help those who rely on delivery of meals from Nutrition and Service for Seniors.
When holidays make it impossible for volunteers to deliver hot meals to home-bound clients of the non-profit, they plan ahead and deliver a shelf-stable box dinner that will meet nutritional needs of those they serve.
Rotarians are needed to assemble as many box dinners as possible in advance of the two major holiday periods ahead.

Plan to come and help; drop by after leaving work and give an hour or two of your time.  You are certain to enjoy your Thanksgiving lunch a good deal more knowing you helped provide a meal to someone else.  (You do not have to be signed up to attend but it will help us to know how many people to expect.)

NOMINATE A NEW MEMBER THIS WEEK!
 Interact Clubs Need Donations
The Interact Clubs are again collecting supplies to create gifts for others.  They request toilet paper rolls to fill with goodies, trinkets, and treats for local nursing homes and hospitals. They can also use left over gift wrapping paper, ribbons and yarn to tie the ends of these treats.  Please bring to the Wednesday, November 9 meeting or to the Rotary Office before November 10 for delivery to the Interact Clubs.

Spotlight on Becky & Chuck Mason
It's no secret that Rotarians Becky and Chuck Mason have generously supported the work of Rotary International and the Rotary Club of Beaumont for many years.  Moreover, they generously give and underwrite many local charitable projects and events.

On Friday, it will be announced that the Masons have graciously underwritten a Lamar initiative which will have a major impact on the College of Education in preparing young men and women to teach in the STEM field.  Rotarian friends are invited to attend.

Do you know of a young lady who will take part in the 2017 Neches River Festival as a princess?

If your daughter or granddaughter is a student at a Beaumont school, graduating in May, and planning to take part in the annual NRF festivities, perhaps she could be sponsored* by the Rotary Club of Beaumont.

Please submit the young lady's name by calling the Rotary Office at 842-1913. The Board of Directors will consider all those proposed.

PROGRAM REVIEW
November 2, 2016
"Celebrating World Interact Week"
Jim Baxter
Youth Service Lane Co-Chair
by John Neely
Our program for Rotary today was “Celebrating World Interact Week” and was facilitated by Rotary’s own Jim Baxter, Director of RCIA, St. Jude Thaddeus Catholic Church.

Jim opened the program with a video, which highlighted Interact International members with the theme, “My Best Days of Service.“  Interact members described their “Best Days…",  recounting their participation in a multitude of projects and events in their community and around the world.

Jim first introduced the President and Vice President of West Brook High School Interact Club, Peyton Parchmont and Bassam Syed.  They were accompanied by the West Brook Principal, Dr. Diana Valdez. West Brook Interact was started in October of 2009. Together they talked about some of the projects that they were involved in and an annual event they hold:
  • Pennies For Polio
  • The Ghostbuster Project
  • The (upcoming) School Supply Drive for Honduras
Their membership has recently been increasing.

Jim then introduced the Kelly Interact Club, along with a number of Junior officers since the Seniors had to attend a separate event.  The students were accompanied by Principal and Rotarian Roger Bemis.  Jim introduced Sarah Asta, Rae Guidry, Claire Strassburger, Marleigh Harken, Lily Knowles, Chinye Nwaobi, Kennedy Simon, and Hannah Tweedel who shared about some projects and events at Kelly:
  • T-Shirt Fundraiser….$20.00 each….proceeds go to a Christmas gifts for Buckner's
  • Homecoming Week events
  • Seasonal costumes and visitation at Calder Woods
  • The Giving Field Project - for better nutrition, and
  • The Club Mixer
World Interact Week is celebrated during the 1st week in November, fostering the idea of Interact service projects and events.  We were pleased to share in the celebration at the Club meeting and happy to have so many students with us.
