On the 60th anniversary of the historic desegregation of Lamar Tech, you need to hear the history of the key figure in this decision...Judge Lamar Cecil. No one can better tell the story of Lamar Cecil, who significantly changed the dark and disgraceful time of discrimination, than historian and author Robert J. Robertson.
Robert is quick to say that his career is in insurance. He is an Agent and Risk Manager with J. S. Edwards & Sherlock. Yet, he is actively engaged and involved as an historian, author, Rotarian, and Beaumont resident.
Robert Robertson is Past President of the Rotary Club of Beaumont, serving 1975-76. He teaches American history classes at Lamar University and has two published books to his credit.
This will be an inspiring presentation that will be remembered for quite a long while. Don't miss it.

Spindletop Club Extends Invitation to Meeting
At the regular weekly meeting of the Spindletop Club on September 20, the guest speaker will be Heather Wooten, author of the book, The Polio Years in Texas. While we tend to think of polio as the disease in other countries, a world away from here, Spindletop Club President Karen Chapman invites you to attend and hear this moving presentation about the impact of the dreaded disease on this region and the state.

COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECT AT THE CHILDREN'S MUSEUM
On Monday, September 19, a good number of Rotarians and other volunteers visited the Beaumont Children's Museum and spent the morning helping to create a Maker Space.
With the addition of an entire wall, a very large space was divided into a special creative space for learning, exploring, and experimenting. The six-feet tall wall was framed and secured, panels added, and a coat of paint. Others worked on assembling storage cabinets and shelving which will be equally useful in the area.
Thank you to the volunteers: Kathleen Alsup, Larry Beaulieu, Denise Berry, Mellie Bevilacqua, Mark Hall, Karyn Hawkins, Fred Kristiansen, Chuck Mason, Gary Moncla, Michael Perez, Mahdi Safa, and Dana Timaeus. Tim Sudela's son, Michael, helped also along with several volunteers from the Museum team including the job foreman, Tim Schreck.

Two Weeks Until Wine Down With Rotary!
The second annual "Wine Down With Rotary" fundraiser will be on Thursday, October 6. There will NOT be a Rotary meeting on October 5 so this event will substitute for the meeting of the week.
Get your tickets to attend and some to sell to friends and co-workers at the meeting this week or phone the Rotary Office. You will taste six wonderful wines as selected for your enjoyment by a panel of wine experts, an appetizer pairing for each of the wines selected, jazz music by Toby Castro and his combo, an opportunity to take a chance on winning some fabulous raffle items and some of the best fellowship in town! It will be an awesome, not-to-be-missed event!
This year, Wine Down With Rotary will be a celebration of the Centennial of The Rotary Foundation. We will recognize the good works of Rotary through the 100 years of the Foundation.

Last week's meeting was exciting as we welcomed 2 new members to the club.
Meet Jerre Croley who was proposed by Michael Perez. Jerre is Location Manager with PV Rentals, Inc. Prior to this position, she was with Fast Signs for 16 years. Jerre's favorite thing is simply spending time with her husband and young son.
Brandon Spears, proposed by friend and co-worker Mike Stankovich, is a Loan Officer with Texas Farm Credit. He loves traveling and is, admittedly, a baseball "fanatic." A Lamar graduate, Brandon and his wife, Lenee, have three young children.

Congratulations to Newest Blue Badges!
This Club isn't known for singing (for sure!) but there was a rousing musical chorus led by Rotary University Dean Lynn Castle as she awarded a Bachelor degree to two Rotarians. President Ted Moor joined her in presenting the coveted Blue Badge to Pat Calhoun and Rebekah Maxwell. Congratulations!

"The Business of Music
and the
Rotary Four Way Test"

Our speaker today was none other than the Maestro! YES, it was Maestro Chelsea Tipton, Music Director for the Symphony of Southeast Texas.
The Maestro was introduced by Doug Fair, Executive Director of the Symphony of Southeast Texas. What a team!
“The Business of Music”
Chelsea recalled the first time that he actually got paid to play his clarinet with the Rochester Symphony. He was very excited. This provided a ‘new stage’ for young Chelsea, and provided an atmosphere wherein the symphony could actually fix its own problems which
apparently is a luxury in the philharmonic business.
Chelsea stated that he came to realize that symphonies are comprised of several different groups of participants:
1) Participants who have a passion for being a part of something greater than themselves;
2) Participants who view their membership as more of a job;
3) Participants with a mix of #1 and #2.
Maestro Tipton asked the question:
When we talk about and promote the symphony, what are we trying to sell? The answer is “providing an atmosphere where the viewer will experience something that has the ability to affect and/or change those attending to be a part of something "larger than life" by getting immersed in the music.
"... and the Four Way Test"
Chelsea also equated every step of the process of designing and planning a successful symphony season using the Rotary 4-Way Test while constantly challenging themselves to bring the highest level of performances,while reaching out to the entire region, establishing connectivity and inclusion.
