President Vernon Pierce has a fun new way to increase the Foundation coffers, and you can take part too! Be the person to Stump Rotary!
Send a photo of yourself from a few years back and some hints or clues that can be shared, and if no one in the room can identify you, you will stump Rotary. The honor comes with a handsome certificate, complete with the President's signature!
If, however, the members can name who is in the photo, you will NOT stump Rotary and you will owe The Beaumont Rotary Foundation a donation of $20 or more! That's what happened to this handsome young fella!
POLIO VACCINATORS MAKE SIGNIFICANT HEADWAY IN NIGERIA
Nigeria is closer than ever to eradicating polio, riding a successful effort to reach children in seven northern states at highest risk for the disease.
"Rotarians have [gone] into remote areas of the country by car, canoe, motorbike, and even on foot to ensure every child gets the vaccine," says Rotary's Nigeria PolioPlus Committee Chair Tunji Funsho.
Members of the Nigeria PolioPlus Committee (NPPC) recently met with leaders of two communities notoriously opposed to immunization, mainly on religious grounds and in protest of the lack of basic health care. They persuaded the leaders to endorse vaccination by obtaining government assurance that mobile health camps would provide free checkups, medications, immunization against diseases besides polio, and other services.
"It was very encouraging to see the positive impact of engaging these leaders . . . witnessed by the huge turnout of crowds at the health camps and women willingly presenting their children for vaccination in households, quranic schools, and other locations," reports the NPPC."
Along with Pakistan and Afghanistan, Nigeria has never stopped transmission of the wild poliovirus. However, it has recorded only three polio cases so far this year (as of 3 June), down from 24 cases for the same period in 2013.
"Increasing the Cost of Doing Business for Criminals"
Cory Crenshaw
District Attorney
by Rotarian Ted Moor
Our guest speaker this week was Cory Crenshaw. Cory was born and raised in Beaumont. He graduated from Baylor with a history degree and went on to obtain his law degree from Texas Tech University. He started work with the Federal Justice Department which, according to Cory, was an excellent learning experience and eventually led to him becoming one of the youngest District Attorneys in the country.
As District Attorney for Jefferson County, Cory is doing everything he can to make criminals have a much harder time living and operating in our communities. Although Cory could not speak about ongoing investigations, he did indicate that next week there would be several indictments brought against employees and officials of BISD.
Cory also spoke about a growing crime problem in Port Arthur. To combat this issue, the District Attorney’s office is in the process of obtaining a “gang injunction” for several neighborhoods in Port Arthur where gang violence and crime are on the rise. This injunction will allow police officers to arrest gang members on a preemptive basis (under certain circumstances) if they are caught outside a certain area after curfew. The gang injunction has been very effective in other parts of the country and Cory indicated that gang violence went down in Brazos County in 2009 from 58 incidents to 2 incidents over a one year period when he worked for the Justice Department there.
Another initiative that Cory is interested in implementing is a DWI “No Refusal Program.” With this program, drivers suspected of driving under the influence can no longer refuse to take a breathalyzer test. This will allow the police department to take the suspect to a nearby approved clinic and get a blood sample which is generally much more accurate (and stands up in court better) than a breathalyzer. Implementing this program has resulted in a huge drop in alcohol and drug-related automobile accidents in other parts of the country.
Cory received numerous ovations for his speech.
(The only incident that occurred was when there was talk of Ted Moor being arrested for repeated offenses of telling bad jokes in public.)
