"Amtrak: The
Beaumont Connection"
Thomas ("Todd”) L. Stennis, III
Director, Government Affairs-South

"Amtrak, the national rail operator, ...operates more than 300 trains each day — at speeds up to 150 mph — to more than 500 destinations." (Amtrak website)

Do people in the Beaumont area ride the train? You bet they do!   In 2014, the Beaumont Amtrak station alone had more than 3400 boardings and alightings.

Our speaker Todd Stennis will have to do some traveling too as he resides in Gulfport, MS.  He is Director of Government Affairs in the South for Amtrak. His primary duties include working with state and local governments served by Amtrak in: Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and West Virginia.

Come learn more about Amtrak and the Beaumont connection.

FEBRUARY 18: Club Service Day
Indeed, “Rotary has heart,” and the Rotary Club of Beaumont has a BIG heart, giving time and resources in Service Above Self year round.   How appropriate that we designate a date close to Valentine’s Day as our Club Service Day, providing hands-on service to multiple projects and collectively having a BIG impact!

We have plans for several different hands-on service projects to work on and possibly complete on Service Day. First priority is to assemble 200 Layette bags for women and children of Nicaragua.  Everyone will have the opportunity to roll up his/her sleeves and lend a hand also to Gift of Life, Habitat for Humanity, and the American Cancer Society.

Bring co-workers and friends who also believe in having fun while helping others.  Don't miss it!

Rotary Youth Exchange,

A Life-Changing Experience

It is the last minute now and we need you to step up for a most important task.  Please volunteer to host our exchange student from mid-March until the end of the school year.

Our club is hosting a young lady, Catharina Cristante, a 16-year-old from Brazil this year.  Catharina is due to transition into a new Host Home at the beginning of March. Your help is really needed to help us identify a potential host family for the final 3 months of her stay. Catharina is a charming 16 year old, 11th grade student, currently attending West Brook.  She would be a delightful addition to any household.

Do you know anyone who would be willing to open up their home to our visiting student? Would you consider doing so yourself?  Please consider this wonderful opportunity for you and your family or suggest it to someone you know. The host families do not need to include a Rotarian to serve as a host.

For more information, please phone Lum Edwards, III, at 832-7736 ext. 132.

Rotary Club of Beaumont Scholarships

The Beaumont Rotary Foundation continues to fund college scholarships for graduating high school seniors.  If you have a child or grandchild preparing for graduation in 2015, please let them know the scholarship applications are available through the high school counselor or from the Club's website by linking here.  The deadline to submit an application is March 1.

Want to help

our Interact

Clubs?
The local Interact Clubs - West Brook, Kelly, Vidor and Orangefield - are joining together to do a project for children in Mexico.  They plan to put together some "candy tubes" and ship them to a school or orphanage there.  They need paper tubes and individually wrapped hard or chewy candies (not chocolate).

Please save paper tubes from paper towels, toilet paper or gift wrapping paper and bring to a Rotary meeting before March 18.  Your candy donation will help too and will be gratefully accepted.

PROGRAM REVIEW
February 4, 2015

"Trash vs. Treasure:
Finding Value in the Collectibles
 and Pop Culture Market"
Meredith Meuwly
Certified Appraiser
by John Neely
Our speaker today was Meredith Meuwly, Director for Appraisals for Dallas Heritage Auctions. Ms. Meuwly was introduced by Rotarian Allen Lea with the McFaddin-Ward House Museum.

Ms. Meuwly's began her presentation explaining that there are four primary groups of collectibles:
1) sports
2) music
3) entertainment
4) comics

Ms. Meuwly went on to expand on these four groups.

SPORTS:
A) Baseball -  which out-sells all other groups and sports
B) All other sports

Sports collectibles are:
  • -Vintage cards, generally earlier than 1980 and preferably pre-1970, are the most sought-after
  • -autographs of Hall of Fame players, World Champions, etc.
  • -Game-used items (shirts, balls, mitts, etc.) from major/historic events and major stars of the MLB, NFL, NBA, NHL
  • -There is also a "good" market for the aforementioned RE: NCAA
  • -Trophies, plaques, Championship rings, etc.
  • -Ephemera ... i.e., event-programs, tickets, etc.

MUSIC:
  • Hand-written lyrics, original sheet music, stage costumes, etc. (the value of which increases in the event of scarcity, an early/premature death/tragic event)
  • Records of pre-1980 songs, in excellent condition
  • Autographs

ENTERTAINMENT:
  • Film
  • Television
  • Radio
Similar to the lists above, including stage props, signed-contracts, movie posters, celebrity art & collectibles

COMICS

Classification Periods:
  • Platinum Age  (1897-1937)
  • Golden  Age (1938-1955)
  • Silver Age (1956-1970)
  • Bronze Age (1970-1985)
  • Modern Age (1985-current day)
The "Super hero" market has skyrocketed!
