Are you still a little confused when people talk about BitCoin or Dogecoin? Do you wonder what "cryptocurrency" is and if you should have crypto in your portfolio?
Wikipedia say:
"A cryptocurrency, crypto-currency, or crypto is a collection of binary data which is designed to work as a medium of exchange wherein individual coin ownership records are stored in a ledger which is a computerized database using strong cryptography to secure transaction records, to control the creation of additional coins, and to verify the transfer of coin ownership."
If that definition doesn't make the concept of cryptocurrency crystal clear for you, you must attend the meeting on Wednesday, October 13 to learn from some experts on the topic. Both with First Financial Trust, Chris Montoya and Trent Martin will be joining us via Zoom to explain.
Chris Montoya joined First Financial Trust in 2001 as an investment analyst and is now the Equities Manager. He created and has served as senior portfolio manager of the Equity Income portfolio since its inception in October 2006. He also covers the Financials, Energy and Consumer Staples sectors. Chris is a CFA Charter holder and is a member of CFA Institute and the CFA Society of Austin. Chris graduated summa cum laude from McMurry University in 2000 with a marketing degree.
As vice president at First Financial Trust, Trent Martin co-manages the Core and Strategic Growth Portfolios, focusing on finding investment opportunities for these diversified portfolios in both developed and developing markets. He focuses his sector analyses on information technology and communications. Trent became a CFA Charterholder in 2018. He earned his Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst designation in October 2014 and became co-portfolio manager of the Strategic Growth Portfolio in 2016. He joined First Financial Trust in January 2008. Trent graduated summa cum laude in December 2007 from Hardin-Simmons University with a dual major in finance and economics.

Building beds is so much fun but delivering the completed bed to a child or several children in a household is so rewarding. On Saturday, October 23, Rotarians from the Rotary Club of Beaumont and the Rotary Club of Port Arthur will be joined by members of the 100 Black Men of Greater Beaumont and Lamar Rotaract members to deliver dozens of beds! Volunteers will meet at the assembly warehouse at 2950 Milam in Beaumont. Wear your "Rotarian at Work" shirt and be ready to work in a small team to make personal deliveries until around Noon.
On Wednesday, October 6, Vice President Uliana Trylowsky had the honor of running the meeting for absent President Brad Brown who traveling on official bank business. She took great pleasure in welcoming two new members to the Club as they were introduced by President Elect Joanne Brown.
Meet Angie Hebert who proudly says her interest in Rotary was piqued by PE Joanne Brown when she learned Rotary is another way to serve in community projects to benefit youth. It was no surprise then when Angie shared that she and her husband, Luke, have two children, one 10-years old and a five-year-old. She is from Beaumont and employed as Vice President of Communications & Physician Development at The Medical Center of Southeast Texas. She also sits on the Board of the Beaumont Children's Museum and is a member of the Beaumont Chamber of Commerce and the Southeast Texas Press Club. Angie's family loves to hike, travel and spend time on the family farm.
Brian Shajari, Intelligence Specialist with the U.S. Coast Guard Reserves, was proposed by Rotarian Ty Coudrain. He joined Rotary to continue "to serve my community outside of uniform and contribute to the betterment of the Beaumont community. Brian has been with the Coast Guard for 20 years, and is currently in the Reserve component. He also works in the Coast Guard Emergency Management and recently was deployed to Louisiana to assist with Hurricane Ida recovery. You will be interested to know that Brian is a bagpiper! He plays with a band in Beaumont and in the U.S. Coast Guard Bagpipe Band. Brian said he is eager to get involved with our flag project and Veteran's outreach.

Celebrates 75 Years of Service!"

The Junior League of Beaumont is all about “Women Building Better Communities.” Our local league traces its roots to 38 women who started an organization called Welfare of Beaumont in 1937. They joined Junior League International in 1946. The league’s primary focus is to develop women with skills to become leaders of other organizations through service projects.
The league has been involved with the formation of and assistance to organizations such as the John J. French Museum, the Beaumont Heritage Society, Art Museum of Southeast Texas, Leadership Beaumont, Jefferson Theatre, Southeast Texas Food Bank, Southeast Texas Family Resource Center and Beaumont Children’s Museum.
It is also involved and supports financially many other community projects such as the Women and Children’s Shelter, Creativity Play Park, Imagination Station Play Park, Buckner Children and Family Services, Mickey Mehaffy Advocacy Program and the Ronald McDonald House in Galveston County.
The league has had many fund-raising events in the past such as a horse show, Lagniappe Luncheon, sales of cookbooks and Spinnings Ad Sales. We are probably all familiar with their largest fundraisers currently – Main Street Market and Dancing with the Stars. Main Street Market this year will be from December 2-4. This event is a one-stop holiday shopping extravaganza featuring merchandise from more than 100 carefully selected vendors from Texas and across the country. The keynote speaker for this event is the actress, Eliza VanCort. Dancing with the Stars will be held March 4, 2022. The league is also happy to accept individual donations as well.
The league also has developed a Community Assistance Fund that provides grants to applicants from which it will donate $50,000 this year and it has $75,000 available for 2022. The league will accept applications for 2022 Spring grants until February 4, 2022.
The Project Research and Development committee is looking at programs for the future dealing with abolishing human trafficking, transitioning youth who are moving out of foster care, focus on health behaviors for kids, support for the Make A Wish foundation. It also provides service squads to non-profit organizations to offer support in many ways.
