"Veterans in the Shadows"

Kerwin B. Stone

United States Air Force

Kerwin B. Stone is a native Texan, and has lived in Texas for all of his life, except for time spent on active duty with the United States Air Force. He has practiced law in Beaumont since 1978.

Kerwin graduated from Southern Methodist University with B.S. and M.S. degrees in mathematics. He served as an officer in the United States Air Force for five years, which included one year in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War. After his Air Force service, Kerwin returned to school on the G.l. Bill, and earned his J.D. degree from The University of Texas.

Kerwin Stone is a long time member of the American Bar Association, the State Bar of Texas, and the Jefferson County Bar Association. He is a past president of the Jefferson County Young Lawyers Association, and is a Life Fellow of the Texas Bar Foundation.

Kerwin is an active member of First United Methodist Church in Beaumont, and is a former member of the Board of Trustees of the Beaumont Independent School District. Much of his time is spent in working with veterans. He has served as President of Vietnam Veterans of America (VVA) Chapter 292 in Beaumont since 2005, and he is also currently serving as Vice President of the VVA Texas State Council, comprised of 37 chapters across the state. He also serves as a member of the Board of Directors of the national organization, Vietnam Veterans of America, Inc.

Habitat for Humanity

We are going to get busy with Habitat for Humanity and help with a home or two that needs to be refurbished following the Harvey storm and flooding. Save the dates of Friday, November 17 and Saturday, November 18, and get your hardhat and tool belt ready to go! Chair Mahdi Safa will tell us more about the project and what we will be doing. Moreover, we will learn about the family that needs us to lend a hand and a help up!

Welcome to the Newest Rotarians in the World!

Carly Broussard receives her new member certificate and Rotary pin from Club President, Tim Sudela (left). Carly is MBA Director for the College of Business at Lamar University and was sponsored by Craig Escamilla (right). Carly has a newborn daughter and enjoys crafting, baking and spending time at the lake with her family.

Joy Walker is new to our club but is a long-time Rotarian whose job as a church minister requires her to relocate often. She was the Chartering President for the Big Sandy (TX) Rotary Club and was Rotarian of the Year from the Downtown Rotary Club in Tyler. Thank you for bringing your experience and dedication to our club, Joy.

CENTRAL MEDICAL MAGNET HIGH SCHOOL INTERACT INSTALLED

A vibrant group of new Interact Club members was on hand for the official Installation of the Interact Club at Central Medical Magnet High School. Our Club has worked for a number of years to get the young club started and on the eve of World Interact Week, the dream was realized.

Central Interact Officers Alexus Popillion (Secretary), Victoria White (President), Adaja Copes (Treasurer) receive the official Certificate from Rotary International by Past President Ted Moor, in whose term the Club was approved.

Many thanks to Jim Baxter who stayed dedicated to the task of starting this club, and special help by Nakisha Burns in coordinating communication between key personnel.

Planning the installation and serving as the Sponsor Liaisons with the Club to help them succeed are Bridget Johnson, Cindy Cherry, and Kathy Bachelot. Thank you, Rotarians!

"Making Change in Jefferson County"

Sheriff Stevens spoke to us about the changes in law enforcement that she promised in her campaign and how she is working to make those changes effective. Her belief is that if the sheriff’s department operates with officers who are “true to who they are and their commission” then that will get them far.

The first item that she has implemented is engaging the department with the community in meaningful ways so that eventually the community will come to trust the officers and a cooperative effort will exist and it will be beneficial to the community and the sheriff’s office. This involves officers working on projects in the community on many different levels.

The second important premise is for the department to know who they are policing. This means identifying criminal activities and the actual criminals themselves. By becoming more a part of the community she hopes that this kind of information will be forthcoming and they will be better able to identify potential problems.

Qualifications for officers are also changing, along with uniforms. Some modification of criteria is being evaluated for qualification of officers. The acceptance of tattoos and beards on officers is being tested through an actual campaign.

The department has been doing community tours all over the area but Harvey really stopped this work for now. She is proud that no deaths resulted from Harvey in our area.

The sheriff has added more patrols and created a traffic division for the 974 square miles that make up the county. The department “polices” our roads and bridges and tickets heavy equipment and trucks that use our bridges and roads incorrectly. The overall budget of the department has decreased by $600,000 mainly by keeping overtime down. She also directs boats on our waterways, and two airplanes are part of the department.

What’s next? Working with partners to establish job skills for the 800 inmates who are in the county correctional institution so that people will have some job skills to take with them and become productive members of our society.
