It is rather hard to believe that the 2013-2014 Rotary year is drawing to a close already. It is time to celebrate and have more fun! On Wednesday, we will enjoy the annual Swan Song for some good-natured fun with outgoing President Chad Blanchard.
The final Rotary After Hours for the year will be an excursion down the Neches River aboard the Ivory Bill. Operated by the Big Thicket Association, the evening promises some great sights and a bit of education from Bruce Walker as the vessel drifts down the scenic river.
We thank Becky and Chuck Mason for underwriting the fee for the two-hour tour.
There will be adult beverages and snacks available for a donation. Any amount collected over cost will be fed to the Polio Pig.
The vessel is full at the current time but we have a waiting list should someone find it necessary to cancel. Phone the office to add your name to the waiting list and/or to advise us if your plans change.
It's not a normal event when a Rotary International Director is on hand for a Club meeting. Nor would it be considered an ordinary day for a large number of District dignitaries to turn out for a club meeting. However, this wasn't just your normal club meeting!
Foundation Chair PDG Roger McCabe asked RI Director Andy Smallwood and other members of the District leadership team to help recognize and express appreciation to Becky and Chuck Mason. The Masons achieved Foundation Giving - Major Donor Level 4!
The Masons' generosity to Rotary International, as well as many other charities, is well-known and deserving of such recognition. They believe wholeheartedly and support the mission and the work to which we are dedicated. We are all grateful.
The last graduating class of 2013-14 was introduced by Dean Lynn Castle with a personalized piece of poetry celebrating the achievement. A Bachelor of Rotary Science Degree was presented (left-to-right) to Ken Evans, Glenn McWherter, and Ken Arola.
In case you are not aware, even long-time Rotarians can earn advanced degrees. Is a Master or Ph.D. in Rotary Science in your future?
You heard the recent devastating news that Polio has spread and cases have been confirmed in 10 countries. We can't allow this dreaded disease to take control again. Rotary Clubs around the globe are stepping up to help with additional financial resources.
One small way you can help is to donate your change and coins to the Pink Polio Pig which will be "visiting" every meeting. Dollar bills and your checks to The Rotary Foundation are accepted too!
It was certainly a grand day for the club. To recognize and honor those who have made contributions to the club's success during the past year is a great reason for a true celebration!
The Spirit of Rotary Award recipient for 2014, Craig Escamilla, was announced by the 2013 recipients, Michael Perez and Cindy Cherry.
Perfect attendance awards went to a number of members and the coveted District Award called the Roll of Fame was presented to Centennial President Becky Mason in front of her home club by incoming District Governor Don Taylor.
The very special Paul Harris Fellow Award was earned by several Rotarians.
Jim Tarbett earned a PHF+2 and used his recognition points to present a PHF to his daughter, Rotarian Shannon Flowers.
Ron Borel earned a PHF+4 and presented a PHF to his wife, Kelley Borel.
Chuck Heare earned his first PHF and also gave one to his wife, Janie Heare.
President Chad Blanchard presented Paul Harris Fellows to members of the club who contributed to the year's special projects and club meetings:
Craig Escamilla
John Paschall
Lynn Castle
Brenda Gray
And lastly, President Chad made a personal gift of a Paul Harris Fellow to his wife, Chelle, for her help and support all year.
The special recognition of Major Donor-Level 4 by The Rotary Foundation to Becky and Chuck Mason was done by PDG Roger McCabe and Rotary International Director Andy Smallwood (see separate article).
Lastly, President Chad gave everyone a present, a "Rotarian at Work" tee shirt with the club's special logo as thanks for the opportunity to serve.
