John B. Ross works for the Department of Justice as an Assistant United States Attorney for the United States Attorney’s Office in the Eastern District of Texas. He currently serves as the Prevention and Reentry Coordinator for the District. Since his appointment to the U.S. Attorney’s Office in 2007, Ross has prosecuted a variety of criminal cases, including racketeering, gun trafficking, narcotics trafficking, Hobbs Act robberies, bank robberies, carjacking, capital crimes, and other violations of federal law.
In 2014, Ross was recognized with the DOJ Director’s Award for Superior Performance by an Assistant United States Attorney. Prior to joining the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Ross was Assistant District Attorney for twelve years in Jefferson County, where he prosecuted a wide variety of state criminal cases.

Our 1.2 million-member organization started with the vision of one man—Paul P. Harris. The Chicago attorney formed one of the world’s first service organizations, the Rotary Club of Chicago, on 23 February 1905 as a place where professionals with diverse backgrounds could exchange ideas and form meaningful, lifelong friendships. Rotary’s name came from the group’s early practice of rotating meetings among the offices of each member.
In the initial years of the organization, Rotarians learned about one another and the various diverse professions of the members by meeting in the offices, factories, businesses and firms of the club members. How about doing as one of the original members did back in the early 1900s?

OPERATION WARM was a success!
It was cold! Quite the appropriate weather to distribute coats to youngsters who need a warm winter jacket for school and play. There was a line to enter the facility as Rotarians worked quickly to find the correct size for each child as they entered. Chair Lynn Hill had an efficient team of Rotarians who handled the task well. A truckload of thanks to Rotarian Lane Olson, owner of A-OK Movers, for handling the moving of dozens and dozens of boxes of coats. Thank you to all who spent a Saturday afternoon "Making A Difference" in the lives of others.

PROGRAM REVIEW
January 10, 2018
"RYLA 2018: Believing in Youth and Building the Dream!"

Our Rotary Club of Beaumont program on January 10th was all about RYLA. Michael Perez, District RYLA Chair, was introduced by Club President, Tim Sudela.
Michael opened the program with recognition of club members, BISD teachers, and school counselors who assisted in making Camp RYLA 2018 such a success. Special thanks were given to club members Nakisha Burns, Roger Bemis, Lynn Castle, and Jim Baxter. Recognition also was given to Shannon Garrod of the Spindletop (Beaumont) Rotary Club. The student-participants and their parents were present, as we heard about 2018 Camp RYLA and the experiences of the weekend.
Camp director Perez stated that the primary participants numbered 287 at the camp, not including the counselors (students from last year's camp) and volunteers, which put the total number closer to 400!
Michael then recognized the contributions of Camp Counselor Jules Perrodin (senior at West Brook), and Gerald Jones, III (junior at Central) and David Darden (junior at Ozen), two of the 24 students selected to be Counselors for Camp RYLA 2019.
Jules stated that "all of us need someone who believes in us, and that success begins with believing in yourself." Jules also gave us an excellent quote: "If you don't build YOUR dream.....someone will hire you to build THEIRS."
Gerald spoke from the heart when he said, "I didn't make friends (at RYLA), I made a family."
David stated that, "Camp RYLA was the greatest experience of my life...amazing!"
Camp director Perez wrapped up today's meeting recounting the years he has spent working with youth, and always being cognizant of the need to anticipate any trouble that MIGHT come up with this age-bracket.
Proudly, Michael talked about "the RYLA Camp experience" as an event where even the "emotionally-removed students, not knowing what they would encounter, rose to a new higher standard of character and leadership during the weekend."
