Amanda Danning
Forensic Sculptor

"11,000 years ago, a man and a child were buried in central Texas with more than 100 pieces of funeral offerings..."

Amanda Danning has a story to share.    She has gained international recognition as a forensic sculptor.

Amanda Danning has been commissioned by the Smithsonian Institution for reconstructions of Jamestown settlers, Buffalo Soldiers, two of the oldest Paleo-Americans in North America and many others. Dr. Douglas Owsley of the Smithsonian Institution National Museum of Natural History (NMNH) says, “It is rare to find someone whose work can help interpret and bring to life the past for so many people.” Danning's work is on display at the NMNH and more than thirty U.S. museums. Her presentations have been featured at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival, fundraisers, universities, and public schools.

We are grateful to Allen Lea and the McFaddin-Ward House Museum for arranging for Ms. Danning's visit.

FEBRUARY 18: Club Service Day
Indeed, “Rotary has heart,” and the Rotary Club of Beaumont has a BIG heart, giving time and resources in Service Above Self year round.   How appropriate that we designate a date close to Valentine’s Day, as our Club Service Day, providing hands-on service to multiple projects and collectively having a BIG impact!

President Vernon Pierce envisions a day when, rather than a speaker presentation, Club members become actively involved in hands-on service projects.  Including the annual assembly of Layette bags for women and children of Nicaragua, everyone will have the opportunity to roll up his/her sleeves and give of themselves in service to one or more projects.

Will your favorite nonprofit, service organization be involved?  Is there something the club members can do to help you get a project started and/or completed at the weekly meeting?  Perhaps it is as simple as folding papers or affixing stamps to a mailing, assembling items for client gift bags, repairing small toys, or any other task* for which a service organization (please, no for-profit business projects!) needs volunteer assistance.  We need to hear that you have an idea for the Club Service Day!

For more information and to express your interest, please contact the Rotary Office at 842-1913 or stay briefly after the meeting on Wednesday, January 14.  We are looking forward to this exciting day and hope your favorite service organization will be a part.

*Please remember, we are planning to have projects done in the Ballrooms of the Elegante.  Any materials needed for the project will need to be brought to the hotel and removed when completed.

Want to help

our Interact

Clubs?
The local Interact Clubs - West Brook, Kelly, Vidor and Orangefield - are joining together to do a project for children in Mexico.  They plan to put together some "candy tubes" and ship them to a school or orphanage there.  They need paper tubes and individually wrapped hard or chewy candies (not chocolate).

Please save paper tubes from paper towels, toilet paper or gift wrapping paper and bring to a Rotary meeting before March 18.  Your candy donation will help too and will be gratefully accepted.

EXCHANGE STUDENT VISITS HOUSTON
Cindy Cherry and her daughter, Hannah, recently enjoyed showing some Houston highlights to Exchange Student, Catharina.  They visited the Museum of Natural Science, the Museum of Fine Arts, the fountain by the Galleria and, of course, Buccees.  They were even spotted at Mile 16 of the Houston Marathon, cheering on the elite runners in that big event.  What fun!

Using their talents, expertise, and leadership, Rotary members worldwide are asked to be gifts to the world this upcoming 2015-16 Rotary year.

Rotary International President-elect K.R. "Ravi" Ravindran called the address to incoming district governors the "most significant moment of my life."

"All of you have been given so many gifts. And you have now been given this great gift: one year to take all your talents, all your gifts, everything that you are and can become -- and Be a Gift to the World," said Ravindran, revealing his presidential theme at the annual five-day training meeting in San Diego, California, USA.

PROGRAM REVIEW

"Four Keys to Leading a Successful Organization"
Jeff Dyson
Director, Lamar MBA Program
by Chris Ayers
Lamar instructor and former Rotarian, Jeff Dyson presented 4 keys to leading a successful organization.  As former owner of M&D Supply, he and his company have weathered many storms over time.  Through product turnover, death, fire, economic pressures, and competition, M&D Supply has continued to survive and thrive over 60 years.  While it wasn’t easy and almost disastrous, staying true to these 4 keys, allowed the company to continue operations, pay taxes and employ many people over the years.

4 KEYS TO LEADING A SUCCESSFUL ORGANIZATION:
  • Value Proposition= competitive pricing + information + time savings.
  • Give Your Concept Legs = Spend more time on your business rather than in your business.  Set up systems that allow your business to operate automatically.  This will give an owner more freedom and less stress.
  • Inspire Trust = As you go to work, your top responsibility should be to create trust with coworkers, customers, and partners.
  • Don’t Squeeze the Goose = Like the farmer that had the good with the golden eggs, don’t squeeze your business to death.  Maintain synergies and relationship to create and preserve existing cash flows and business.
