LOOK
WHAT'S AHEAD!
On November 9, the Club will have the honor of recognizing our heroes, the Rotarians who are veterans of any of the branches of the armed services.  Our speaker will be Colonel Brad Bane, Commanding officer of the 842nd Transportation Battalion stationed at the Port of Beaumont.
Residents of this state enjoy hunting and fishing year-round.  Those involved in these activities know the Game Wardens enforce the rules and regulations that keep everyone safe.  Come meet Mike Boone, Hardin County Game Warden on November 16.

Nominations Requested for Coveted
VOCATIONAL EXCELLENCE AWARDS
In recognition of “Service Above Self,” the Rotary Club of Beaumont will recognize and honor individuals who exemplify a “service above self” attitude in their vocation on Wednesday, November 30.

These coveted awards are given annually to community members who demonstrate exceptional service, honesty, and friendliness in performing their jobs.  Some past recipients describe receiving this honor as "a treasure,"  "very special," and "the only time I've received anything like this."

With the chosen date immediately following Thanksgiving, it will be a wonderful time to give thanks for the good work of others in our community.

We appreciate your support of this honor with your nominations of deserving people who you have come in contact with through your business transactions.  Please submit your nomination to Bridget Johnson at email ladybmj@gmail.com by Friday, November 11, 2016.

 Interact Clubs Need Donations
The Interact Clubs are again collecting supplies to create gifts for others.  They request toilet paper rolls to fill with goodies, trinkets, and treats for local nursing homes and hospitals. They can also use left over gift wrapping paper, ribbons and yarn to tie the ends of these treats.  Please bring to the Wednesday, November 2 meeting or to the Rotary Office before November 10 for delivery to the Interact Clubs.

NOMINATE A NEW MEMBER THIS WEEK!
What are Rotary Fellowships?
Last week, President Ted Moor announced that Rotarian Allen Lea was enrolled in the Rotary Wine Appreciation Fellowship as an expression of the Club's thanks for serving as chair of the wine fundraiser.  Many were puzzled and curious about Rotary Fellowships and had never heard of the concept.

Rotary Fellowships are independent groups of Rotarians, family members, program participants and alumni who share a common passion. Being part of a fellowship is a fun way to make friends around the world. The groups share information and interact via email and shared websites.

Fellowship activities vary widely. Members come together around hobbies or interests such as  jazz music and classic cars, or vocations such as writing or medicine. Some groups are purely social while others use their fellowship for service projects. View a list of Rotary Fellowships.

What a fun time!  Rotarians, spouses, and friends met on the patio at The Grill on Thursday evening, October 27 and had a great time!  Conversations were lively and the laughter was abundant at the casual and relaxing event.  Hosts Kathleen Alsup and Stephanie Shoemaker were gracious, and we are grateful for the hospitality they provided.  Take a look at other photos of the event by accessing here.

Rotary After Hours will take a hiatus during November and December because of the holidays.  We will all look forward to these fun evenings again in 2017!

Do you know of a young lady who will take part in the 2017 Neches River Festival as a princess?

If your daughter or granddaughter is a student at a Beaumont school, graduating in May, and planning to take part in the annual NRF festivities, perhaps she could be sponsored* by the Rotary Club of Beaumont.

Please submit the young lady's name by calling the Rotary Office at 842-1913. The Board of Directors will consider all those proposed.

*(Please note: This is a sponsorship in name only. The financial obligation is the responsibility of the family.)

Where's Rotary?

Rotary is practically everywhere in the world so no matter where your travels may take you, you can find the Rotary wheel on a sign or landmark.  Many are even able to find a meeting to attend!

Angela Baker recently traveled to Natchez, Mississippi, and shared pictures of the club's signature project which marked their 50th year celebration in 1969.
Let us see where you've been and what you learn about world-wide Rotary while you are there.

Have you traveled and found the Rotary logo somewhere along your journey?  It's fun to see what clubs around the world have done as a project for their communities. Send us a photo so we can all share in your experiences.

PROGRAM REVIEW
October 26, 2016
"The State of the State"
Brandon Creighton
Texas State Senator
by Joshua Taub
During his presidency, Herbert Hoover was known to attend church on Sunday mornings.  In spite of the economic stress and distress of the day, it was easy to remain inconspicuous, and quietly slipped in and out of church without much fanfare.  Perhaps this gave President Hoover a chance to quietly decompress and reflect on the events of the day.

Hoover was not known as a particularly warm and fuzzy guy; rather he was more terse and acerbic.  When he arrived back at the White House following the service, his wife was eager to hear how things went.

“How was church, dear?”
“It was fine.”
“Were there many people in the pews?”
“I didn’t count.”
“How was the choir?”
“I didn’t listen.”
“How was the minister’s sermon?”
“Straightforward.”
“What was his theme this Sunday?”
“Sin.”
“What did he have to say on the subject?”
“He was against it.”

And so it goes…

We had the pleasure this week of listening to our State Senator for the 4th District, the Hon. Brandon Creighton. Since arriving in the Texas Senate, Senator Creighton has maintained his focus on the fundamental purposes of government, securing tax reductions and advocating for crucial infrastructure improvements in commercial waterways and ports.

The Texas legislature will convene in January 2017 to do its Biennial work: passing a budget, addressing the needs of the Texas citizenry, and keeping the Texas economic engine purring (or silently humming if you’re driving President Ted Moor’s Tesla).

Our job as a legislature, Senator Creighton suggests, is to maintain and run the Texas economic engine that continues to fuel our growth and our prosperity.  People who have relocated to Texas in recent years are so pleased with their lives that they wonder what took them so long to choose to come here.  Senator Creighton wants to keep that narrative running long into the future.

In that future, near and long term, Creighton sees our ports and waterways playing a key role.  If we can remain nimble and creative, we can bring more and more business to our state through our ports.  Busy, revenue-generating ports and waterways are always good for southeast Texas and for the entire Texas Gulf region.

Keeping our state budget balanced and keeping our priorities straight will be at the heart of the discussions in the state halls of power.  Tort reform, reasonable regulation, and job creation we can protect will be driving a number of these conversations.  Over 5,000 bills will be filed when the legislative session opens.  The hours will be long, the discussions and debates will be passionate, and Senator Creighton is committed to doing the work and getting it done. “There is no ‘center aisle’ dividing the room in the Texas capitol building. We all sit together, and together we work to figure it out,” Creighton is proud to say.

We are always deeply appreciative that our elected government officials visit us at the Beaumont Rotary Club, and we always deeply appreciate their willingness to serve us and great state of Texas.
